The crops are poor, the potato crop es- pecially was almost a total failure—the rot was not so bad for many years—and busi- ne3s generally is most oppressed. It was hoped early in the ‘year that the turning point had been reached, but this hope is ao longer entertained and the /imes fears that the country must pass through more severe trials before an improvement will! take place. ne --4>o—- — Wuat is Ir?—The steamer ‘‘ Cortes,” which arrived yesterday morning from St. John’s, N. F., brought up a curious kind of sea monster, which was caught at Cata- lina on the 24th ult., by two fishermen. it had been driven round the east point of that harbor during a gale, and when notic- ed it was still living, but was in a very ex hausted condition, and was rescued with much difficulty and taken to St. John’s, N- F., where it was sold to parties in New York for $500, who intend to preserve it and put it up on exhibition. The follow- ing are the dimensions curtailed from the St. John’s, N. F. ‘Star’ :—The animal is forty feet six inches between extremities, or from the point of its longest tentacle to the point of its tail. It has eight arms Which radiate from the head of the animal, four from either side of the head, near the extremity of which, with two of the shorter tentacula between them, spring tw> enormously long arms or feelers of &bout thirty feet six inches each, varying in thickness from their extremities to the base at from about six to twelve inches in Circumference. The mass of the body, inx Oluding the tail, was about ten feet in length and about three in breadth, with @n average thickness of about twelve inches. GRANT, Our Charlottetown despatch informs us that Rev, Geo. M. Grant has signified his acceptance of the Principalship of Queen’s College, Kingston, Oniario, to which posix tion he has been elected. The reverend gentieman will be greatly missed, not only by the c ngregation of St. Matthew’s, over which he has so long and ably presided as pastor, but by the citizens af Halifax gen- erally, whose good opinions he has won, for though many of us had occasion to differ from him at times, none wiil deny that he has been a most energetic and use- ful citizen, foremost in every good work. Especially will he be missed by our benevo~ lent institutions, in nearly all of which he has long been a most indefatigable work- er; his e'oquent appeals have brought money to their treasuries, and his untiring efforts have materially contributed to their successful management.
