were both very surprised and disturbed to learn the Board of Governors had rejected the recom- dation of the Search Committee that Barb llaly be appointed Director of Athletics at UPEI. s was a duly constituted and carefully chosen mittee that had conducted an extensive search, that had the opportunity to become well ac- inted with the several candidates by reviewing s and carrying out interviews. It seems that cting the recommendation of such a committee uld be done only in the most exceptional circum- ces and with the most compelling reasons. ce the Board has presented no reasons for its ision, the process of selection does not give the earance of fairness. We are also worried that the Board might | view it within its rights and responsibilities to ct the recommendation of other search commit- , and to give no justification for these decisions. By Marko Peric AST WEEK I DISCUSSED HOW AND WHERE find a used car. In this issue I’1] tell you what to after you’ve found a car. If you have not checked ut beforehand, the first item is price. Youcan ask ious people about prices, but some type of used guide is indispensable. Look for a Canadian sion, the American prices are useless. Various des are available at most stores that sell maga- es and pocketbooks. Even if you don’t want to the guide, flip through it and check the prices. me of these books also contain other information, h as the fuel economy numbers and reliability 's of various cars, as well as models to avoid. It’s _ Once you have a ballpark price, compare it Inst the asking price of the car you’re looking at. ually it will be slightly above the prices in the de. If the asking price is far higher than the ommended price, you may have a hard time otiating. On the other hand, if the price is THE COLD GREYING MORNING OF AN ober day, the men of Marion Hall move them- ¢s forward from their stupors to suit up for the ng day’s battles. Making their way to Pisquid |L, to the Adrenalin Zone, these young warriors ld find themselves unprepared for the coming 8ers that would soon fall on their shoulders. As the first platoon shuffled forward under Cavy packs of paint ammunition that they had Pony into battle, you could see the previous s celebrations exacting their toll on their ‘es. The battle would be joined soon as the Blue " ‘ries to force an unorganized attack on the Ly W team’s heavily defended area. Yellow soon lose their leadership from a smart move What if the Board disagreed with the candidate se- lected by the Presidential Search committee? Would you also reject that recommendation and provide no information to the university community about your reasons for doing so? We recognize that it is within the legal power of the Board to reject the recommendations of such committees, although our understanding is that this power has not previously been exercised. And while we may disagree with the wisdom of exercising that power, we feel that it is imperative that the Board have a higher standard of accountability to the univer- sity community when carrying out such actions. We call upon the Board to make a public statement to the entire University community, clearly stating its reasons for rejecting the recommended candidate, Barb Mullaly, for Athletic Director, and indicating why she was not considered to be suffi- ciently qualified for the position. Furthermore, we surprisingly low, be wary of high milage or defects with the car. It may have been in an accident, so don’t be afraid to ask about the history of the car. A word about milage-- typical milage is fif- teen thousand kilometers a year. Take the milage, and divide by the number of years ago the car was made. If you get more than twenty thousand, that’s high milage. Ifthe total milage is less than eighty thousand klicks, though, don’t worry about it, unless the car is only one year old. Above two hundred thousand, the life of the engine becomes a factor, especially in domestic cars with small powerplants. High revving four cylinder engines only last so long. Quality has improved in recent years, but still be wary of high milage on these engines. Exceptions are Honda, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes, and a few other com- panies, which are known to make durable engines. If a car is priced well, and has acceptable milage, a test drive is the next order ofbusiness. Take the car out for as long as the seller will allow you. Most will let you go by yourself, which ismuch better totheir rear by the Blue team taking out Cap’n (Tom Beveridge) Morgan and two others who were with him. The yellow team would rally though, and defend their position to the end, wining this battle. On the second attack it would be Blue to whom had to defend that unenviable position and face the attack by Yellow’s crack attack squads. Blue was able to fend off Yellow’s advances as far as meters away, by taking out eight of ten of Yellow’ s attackers. As the whistle was to blown ending the game the four heroic Blue defenders layed down a suppression fire so intense that would shake up even the most exper!- enced warrior. The next two battles would see both the call upon the Board to outline what it would plan to do should it disagree with the recommendation of the Search Committee for a new President of UPEI. On the test drive, drive on different roads, and see how well the car handles at various speeds. It’s a good idea to take the car out on the highway, if only for afew minutes. Watch for firmness in the steering, listen for rattles and squeaks. If there are little things that annoy you on the test drive, imagine how much they’ll bug you later. Check for comfort as well. A small car is not a good buy if you’re cramped and crowded while driving it. You should check the back seat as well. If you don’t fit back there, think about your future passengers. If they’re the same size as you are, they won’t like the rear either. Rather than driving the car for the whole time, take it to a reputable mechanic. If you don’t know any mechanics, ask around and get a recom- mendation. Often the underside of the car reveals more than the visible portions, so make sure to have it raised on a hoist. A thorough inspection Yellow and Blue teams trying to capture their opponent’s flag as the objective. The blue team would use their come from behind tactic again in the first battle to secure Yellows flag, but in the second battle, Blue’s lack of strategic planning would mortally hurt them as they used their same tactics yet again. This time yellow was so well prepared for Blue to do anything, that they started to fire on their own people who were trying to come back to the trenches to warn of another ° attack from behind. Yellow’s fatal flaw was that once their numbers were reduced, they did not leave anyone back in reserve to defend their flag. This was discovered as two heroic souls from the Fry 1. Dear Editor, As a student of UPEI, I have no problems with the delay for an athletic director. Actually, the delay proves that there is a lot of well-deserved concern for the athletic department, What is this uncon- firmed crap about Barb Mullaly supposedly awarded the job? Unconfirmed means not necessarily true. Scott MacDonald seems to biasly favour Barb Mullaly, but he has every right to do so. In closing his article, he stated that UPEI has alienated someone who works hard for them (Mullaly). Is he implying that a new athletic director wouldn’t work hard for UPEI? Ihope that an excellent choice for an athletic director is made. -- A True Panther Fan may not be necessary, but it never hurts. Some mechanics may charge to examine a car, enquire if you don’t know their policy. Keep in mind that paying a small fee is better than spending thousands of dollars on a bad car. If the car is mechanically sound, meets your needs, drives well, and the price is right, it’s time to buy. But DON’T PAY THE ASKING PRICE. Nine out of ten sellers price their car well above what the car is worth. Do not hesitate to negotiate. If you drive a hard bargain you can save hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars. This is your money, so press until the dealer will not reduce the price any farther. If you are too timid to wheel-and-deal, get a trusted friend to haggle on your behalf. That’s all I can really tell you about buying a used car without answering specific questions. I hope that the suggestions in this column will be helpful the next time you’ re in the market for a used car. arion hall warriors redefine total carnage Yellow team charged the Blue defensive to capture their flag and bring it back to their own trenches with only seconds left in the battle.
