ify its liquidation. Third, and in my opinion most compelling, the wage force at the university Ts too large to turn out rudely into the cold. There are be- tween 400 and 500 full and part time employees who vote and whpse pay checks help support the Island's consumer economy. The University of P.E.I. is likely to survive until Maritime Union is adopted‘in about ten years, at which time it will probably become a branch campus -of a central University of the ' Maritime located in Halifax, Moncton, or some other mainland Vmetropolis. U.P.E.I. will have flno control over the political decision to unify the Maritimes, but perhaps it can save itself from the fate of becoming a humble feeder college of a meg- aversity. There is still time for us to become a learning centre of some distinction, so that we will have bargaining power when, following_Maritime “Union”the mandarins of higher education sit down/to play strip poker. The real threat confronting, U.P.E.I. is not extinction but stultification. Is this to be just another elitist academy, _ like scores of other mediocre .institutions thrfiughout North America, playing the dreary game of forcing students into "preeselected slots labeled "graduate school, "teaching," “the profession,"engineering," ,"business," and so on? Or is it tofBe a genuine “people'univer— sity," perhaps a "university, without walls," where students of all ages and backgrounds can meet to discover how to use their mindS'better and to develop their creative skills? Although U.P.E.I. is far advanced down the first road, it is still not too late to “'turn back and to take the second and more rewarding route. ” ‘ Yours truly, Don M. cregier Prof. History Dept.
