J E EVNu5HNhH5VsVhVh5VHa5VhEVf- uVihV ' Thoughts For Our Time By His Eminence Cardinal llicfiuigan (Copyright) U'H's'-5'-'-'-'u'u'L rm: rnonuzn or SUFFERING The world today often evaluates things almost exclusively accord- ing to the amount of pleasure and comfort which they bestow on mankind. Anything which in- creases his ease, man regards as a good; anything which causes liim lnconveniend or discomfort is regarded as an evil. Modern ad- vertising, paying heed to this atti- tude of mind, displays products in tho public eye, showing their worth because they will produce more pleasure in human life. In a word, 9. life of ease. comfort and enjoyment seems to be the final and of human existence. And why has such a state of mind gained hold? When man ex- pels God and all idea of superna- tural values from his life, as no has done in an age of secularism and materialism, he must of ne- cesslby strive to create a paradise here on earth to satisfy the crav- ings of his heart. so much so, that any slight discomfort he is forced to undergo, comes to be re- garded as an injustice. The problem of suffering in hu- man life is one which has always puzzled mankind. How can a Just and merciful God allow His crea- tures, whom He loves, to suffer? To answer this question satisfac- torily and still consider man's life on earth as the only thing which really matters, is impossible. We can only offer an adequate solu- tion to this problem by establish- ing the role of suffering in the Czliristian economy of salvation. 0 The first point to be understood is that man's life on earth is not the be-all or the end-all of every- thing. It is simply a. period of trial or probation wherein we show God our willingness to serve Him and love Him and to be united with Him in time and in eternity. Such a. CCli1C6'ptlOn of life, bolstered by the fact that man has been weak- cncd in the pursuit of the service of God as a result of original sin, demands that some suffering play a part and 9. necessary one The first and most essential kind of suffering which enters into the (fhristian life is that required in order to keep the law of God. The observance of the Commandments demands some suffering or self- denlal. Sin, or the violation of these laws, always presentsitself to us under the guise of something desirable, and in order to resist its enticements, we must. deny ourselves. "He who does not carry his cross and follow Me", says Christ. "cannot be My disciple" (Luke xiv, 27). Beyond this first stage of self- clenial, however, the true Christ- lan must. go even further. He must also deny himself in those things which are not forbidden, in order to strengthen his will, and develop virtue, so that he may be able to resist the allurements to sin. for if he indulges in all which is not strictly forbidden. he will hardly be able to resist that which is forbidden. O 0 0 1 Mortification, self-denial or suf- fering is also necessary in making ieparatlon for sin. The commission of sin leaves a debt which must. be paid to the Divine Justice, at least to some extent. Even though, ti-irougli sincere repentance, God forgives the guilt; of sin, there, nevertheless, remains a certain debt to be paid in this life or in the next-and one of the best means to make such reparation is through mortlfication, self-denial or the voluntary acceptance of ruffcrliig. Christ,,our model in re- naration. has shown us by His life and by His death, the need of suf- fering to restore the balance in the. scales of Divine Justice. and as Christians, we cannot be as St. Bernard says "weak and effemln- BAIIA'I WORLD FAITH when needed. led by its own members. age of severity. He cannot, since only I good man can be the object of His will. He does so, indirectly. however, not for their own sakes, but in connection with some good which can or will result. For ex-l ample, He may permit such suf-1 ferings in the life of an individual to remind him of his real purpose here on earth, to make him turn to Him in our needs in prayer, 01' to assist him in turning from sin. Jus as a parent who refuses to ad inlster medicine to his sick child because he fears to cause him certain discomfort can hard- ly be said to really love him, so me, God in order to bestow on us a greater good, often permits us to suffer in this life This does not mean that we should not prudently care for the health of our body, nor still less does it. mean that we should en- danger our life or health by ex- cessive voluntary mortiflcation, since our bodies too are an essen- tial part of our human nature and must be respected as temples of God; it does mean, however, that we should always accept eut- fering in accordance with God's Will. Such a conception of the role of suffering in human life does not mean that our lives must necessarily be miserable. As a matter of fact, it is the only view of life which will make our lives invents, New cheap Oil Burner 329.50 FOR FURNACES S14.75 FQILSTOVES Mitchell, S.
