Strike By Nurses Is Narrowly Averted PENTICTON, B.C. iCPi - A l..g.i-ninute offer by the Penticton hospital board Sunday night averted Canada's first strike by nurses. Fifty-three nurses at the Pen- ticton General Hospital voted at I hastily-called meeting to accept the board's offer of full imple- mentation of a conciliation board recommendation for higher pay. The walkout had been scheduled to begin at l a.m. today. Only emergency cases were being ad- mitted to the hospital. Of the 102 patients in the hos- pital Saturday. administrator E. F. MacDonald had estimated there would be no more than 40 left by strike deadline. Fifteen of the pati- enta were newborn babies. GET 3244 PER MONTH Basis for the settlement was a wage offer by the hospital board of 3244 a month. as recommended by the conciliation board. Previ- ously the hospital board had of- fered 3240 a month. The present wage is 3230. Apart from the length of the con- tract. the offer represents fulfil- ment of the nurses' demands. They wanted the contract to run only until Dec. 31 but it will be effective until July Ill. 1958. The nurses had pi ' d to provide emergency staffs during Siiinnymen, women gain 5& 15 llis. The hospital board had said it would allow the strike to take place in hopes the government agency would recas- nize its "obligation" to the nurses.
