Indeed, evidence from other universities suggests that the failure to erect a separate administrative structure dooms Women’s Studies programs to years of hardship and possible failure. The success of such programs is dependent upon personal commitment by a handful of individuals who expend great amount of time and energy with neither adequate recognition their universities. nor compensation from Fears have been expressed by some that giving a Women’s Studies Program a separate identity might result in its becoming segregated and -easily devalued. However the suggested structure similar to Canadian Studies with a multidisciplinary coordinating committee should enable the program to remain open and viable, and not segregated. Women’s Studies should not be closed to men in the manner that academic studies were long closed to women; nor should it be taken over by men in their "natural" role as decision makers and leaders. On the other hand, those men who accept women’s present inferior position as "natural". will need encouragement to participate in Women’s Studies. here again commitment of the University is essential. An independent multidisciplinary program best fulfils this commitment.
