number of well-grounded complaints
during the past two months. No doubt
the snow-full has been heavier than
usual, but this fact affords no ' excuse for

neglects to perform the duties set forth in
the section of the Act above quoted shall
be liable to a fine not exceeding five
»dolluxs. These ,dues and penalties muy

oath of one or more credible witness or
svitnesecss. In default of goods and
chattels whereon to levy the delinquent
persons may becommitted to the Jail of

Such are some of the plain provisions of
the Highway Act-,_a.nd one has only to
read them to become satished that very
many of the Overseers have been grossly
negligent of their duties, and have a`-
ready rendered 'themselves liable to 
'penalties prescribed. In fact it is to the
neglect of the Overseers that the present
condition of the roads is due. We trust
5 that on the publication of this notice they
willprcmptly attend to their neglected
duties and have the roads put in decent
