Sir.—As forecast. the United States Department oi Agriculture has an- nounced that temporary permits un- der the Import of Milk Act will be cancelled as oi May 31st. and per- manent Permits issued as on June lst alter complying with the regula- tions as per said act. The work oi inspection under the Departmental Agriculture at Ottawa to decide what shippers can obtain permanent per- mits is progressing. but in several areas shippers have decided that they cannot hope to re-enter this market at present — these being creamerics whose patrons have not shown a wi lingness to go to the ex- pense oi b ilding milkhouses and making other changes in herds and premises to meet the United States requirements. It is impossible to say exactly how will be cut of! on May 31st, but com- petent authoritiessay 75%. That is a serious mat r. especially as the United State market was the high- est priced one open to Canadian. dairy products. \ l It is certain that there is a market in the United States for Canadian milk and cream. and despite the fact. that the inspection imposed on Can- adian producers is more severe than that on United States dairymen, it would be unwise for the Canadian dairy industry to decide notto cater to that market. We are making great strides in the eradication oi tuberculosis. and there will soon be a much larger supply of milk and use in fluid form. In order to ob- tain the reward ior the heavy ex- penses of creating these areas we- niust make a concerted eilort to. make sure that, in at least those areas. the cleaning up oi stables and the making oi other necessary im-- provements. is finished. for that will at once re-open the United States’ market to our products. ’ In the end the effect of the action of the United States Government should be oi great value to the Cana- dian dairy industry, by making the reputation oi Canadian milk and cream higher than ever. We have the chance to profit by our present hardships and we should not neglect it. I . We are. Sir. ctc.. National Ilalry Council of Canada.
