The crossing of' the Atlantic through fog and mist, on a pathiess voyage, 11,000 feet above' the surface of the ocean and diving to within ten feet of it to escape the conditions encountered, has only one paral- lel in history, the voyage of Christopher Coium-buson the ulicharted ocean and withthe possibility, aswas believed by his crew, of sailing to the edge of the world and fail- ing off. " ' Tile little machine ill which Captain Alcock made his adventurous voyage will be duplicated centuries hence as was the caravei' of Christophel' Columbus, 'to show the evolution of ships, and the modest little ai1‘plalie will be to the airplanes of the future what the Santa ll/Iaria, which recently lay moored in our' harbor, is to the great trans-Atlantic liner, the Olympic. _ 'Aicock's voyage of sixteen hours is but the begin-' ning of an era, as was the three months’ voyage of Chris- 1 topiicr Columbus. What the evolution ofthe airship may develop is as inconceivable to us of today as was that of the occall-going craft of 1492. We know how trans-At- lantic ships llave_gro\vn and can only guess what shall be when "the heavens are filled with commerce.” ~ _ That Canada should have the honor of producing tllel (`hristopher Columbus of the air is a matter of pride to all Canadians. The name of Alcock will never be forgot- ten nor will it be forgotten in history that he was born in Canada. or _ 0 ____ l.()I$S‘|`|'Il{ |.\` \`l‘I.\"l`|(} \'I`l().\`. The official report of the Lobster lllvestigatiolls in (`al_lada for 1.918, by Mr. A. P. Knight, M.A., M.i)., F.R. C.S_, Professor of A_niniai Biology, Queens University. Kingston, Ontario, has just been issued. lt will be re- membered th-at Professor Knight visited this province during 1918 and conferred with many of our fishermen and canners. He also visited' the fishing sections of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Magdalen Islands, and the result of his observations and findings is given in the re- port. It is an exhaustive- treatise and contains a fund of information relative to this once great but now declin- ing industry. The burden of the report is the decline, the' causes for the decline alid suggestions as to how, in the opinion not only of Professor Knight, but of well inform- ed canners, packers, dealers and -fishermen, this decline may be arrested. The report also shows the fallacy of many theories regarding the habits of lobsters. For example, all “Eas- etrn paper” asserts that “Lobstersiare distributed quite evenly over the inshore belt extending from the Dela- ware Capes to the Straits of Belle Isle, roughly estimated at 2,000 miles. This area has a known width of 25 miles and probably much lno1‘e in some places. The bar- ren spots are few and comparatively small. Conse- quently, it is fair to assume that lobsters are mol'e plen- tiful than other fish within the specified area. .Fears of extinction, therefore, are groundiess.” “The mari' who wrote that,” concludes Professor Knight, “is either igilorantof the facts or he is presum- ing upon the credulity of the public.” The Professor proceeds to show that “it has never been proved that lob- sters arc distributed cveniy over the inshore belt," never been proved that the inshore belt has a known Width of 25 llliles, ilor that the barren spots are few and compar- :lctivciy small. “Consequently,” he concludes, “it is not fair to assume that lobsters are more plentiful than other . fish within the specified area, and no body of intelligent fishermen have any fears about the extinction of the lobster. lt is utterly impossible to exterminate any mar- ine animal.” l ' Investigation carried oil during the seasons of 1917' and 1918 proved conclusively that there were practically no lobsters in offshore waters, that is beyond a depth of fifteen fathoms_ “That fisherman,” says Professor Knight, “is living ill a fool’s paradise who believes that all inexhaustible stock is present in the ocean.” As to the decline in the lobster fisheries the Pfrofes- sol' says that in 1885 one man in one boat, off Tignish, caught oil the average 45,000 pounds of green lobsters, using .150 traps, or a catch of 300 pounds to a trap. This season, 1918, one man in one boat fishing the same num- ber of traps caught only an average of 900 pounds.” This is a sample of the decline all along the coasts. The reason attl'ibute_d by Professor Knight is over-fish- ing. The remedy he proposes is short seasons and the establishment of lobster sanctuaries, such, for instance, as the prohibition of fishing in Richmond Bay and other suitable bays around the coasts. Thismatter has been discussed at different times inthe Guardian and support- ed by many of our fishermen and packers. It would ap- pear from the data available thatif this valuable fishery is to be saved from practical extinction some areas must be set apart in which lobsters may propagate, safe from the greed of their arch enemy, man. . _?iO_____- , .\'_o'rEs _ * Some people claim that if restriction were`placed on the export of fdodlstufts from Canada the__industrial sit- ¢F¥k#2#¢§4hQ¢F¢§‘%#$$¢P`~$# seas _iirigasjsa 5% IV ALBERT L.
