It has been recognised that higher prices on the Island militate against full developme ‘ oi its possibilities as a tourist paradise and unduly burden every gasoline consumer. The Government went very thoroughly into the matter and found that the only place where economies could be effected by the distributors oi gaso- line was in their marketing activi- ties which ‘ oi excessively keen competition have been con- ducted along extravagant lines. fibers has been widespread loaning oi equipment, duplication o! outlets. i l I _ etc., all adding to the burden oi costs without resulting in any beneiit to the consumer or to the trade. When the Government drew these facts to the attention oi the oil companies, the companies admitted that the practices were extravagant but pointed out that unless all com- panies would agree to curtail the extravagances each company would have to carry on with them in de- fence oi its existing business. The oil companies oi themselves ~ could not get together to eliminate such practices because it might be construed as an oiTence under the Anti-Combine Law. Accordingly the Government draited regulations to prohibit loaning oi equipment, to en- force posting oi prices and generally to restrict unsound business prac- tices, which have resulted in exces- sive costs oi distribution. These reguln is will be duly submitted for enactment. The Government has been able to secure irom the more important distributors s pro- mise that they will in the mean- time conduct their business as though these regulations were al- ready in iorce and pass on to the consumer the benefits oi reduced ’ marketing costs to the extent of one and one-half cents per gallon. 4 Premier MacMillan and his col- leagues are to be warmly congratula- ted on the success attending their keiiorts in this connection, the result oi which will be a substantial saving to every consumer oi gasoline within me Province. j '14 SERIOUS OFFENCE For the convenience oi the pub- lic, the voters’ lists, as taken by the enumerators, have been posted throughout the city, and all voters nre advised to see that they are pro- perly registered on the lists. It ll necessa y to emphasize, how- ever, that these lists must not be tom or destroyed. Already oom- plaint has been received that. one oi the lists posted has been torn down. This is a very serious oflence, the penalty ior which is thus set liorth in the Election Act: "34. (1) Every person unlawiully taking down, covering up, mutilating, deiacing or altering any printed or written proclamation, notice, list oi or other document, author- ised or required by this Act to be posted up, is guilty of an indictable oiience against this Act and liable on indictment or on summary 0°"- viction to a fine not exceeding two thousand dollars and costs oi pro- lecution, or to imprisonment ior a term not exceeding two years with or without hard-labour, or to both 511351 fine and costs and such imPrl-Efln- electo meat." i LIBERAL COMMENT The comment, reprinted elsewhere explained by our loql contempor- ary.
