A , _ Some Gains in Verdnn Section. Citizens of Charlottetown were af- forded a rare treat yesterday wllell Rev. Dr. John Pringle of Yukon fame, and who has just returned from battle- scarred France and Belgium, gavo three addresses throughout the day. Rev. Dr. Prillgle arrived in Char- lottetown on Saturday night and dur- ing his brief stay here is the guest of Conductor John Macdonald of the P. E. I. Railway. Dr. Pringle occupied the pulpit of Zion Church in the morning. Ile read the story of the Prodigal Son as the Scripture lesson and his discourse was followed with intense interest as he told of experiencés at the front and showed how the bciter instincts of the men are brought out by very simple means. His discourse went to show that the msn are upon the whole more spiritually inclined than before they entered this terrible confllct_ Dr. Pringle occupied the pulpit of the Opera House at 4 p. m.. and was very well attendl-:li considering that only a very brief notice was given be- forehand. Rev. Dr. Fullerton presl- ded and after a verse of "Onward Christian Soldiers," had been sung, llc introduced and paid a deserved tribute to the speazer whose fame Ile said extended ov r and well beyond this continent. - Rev. Dr. Pringle began his address by stating that he was not on duty these days in the sense of being a recruiting officer. He said he had no harsh words to say to the men who have not enlisted. This is a question, said be for every man to settle with himself_ In many cases he was cer- tain it took more courage to stay home than to go to the front. .The Docter in opening told that llc wasis? P: E. Islander-born in Chur- lottetown, the son of a soldier, and was brought up inl barracks until he was ten yelfrll of age. One of his earliest accomplishments was learning to box and llc claimed that the zlrt of knowing hos/ to rlrbt had kept him out of many llgIl.:s_ Ile never l'cIie\‘ed in corscrlptloll but in universal training. llovs :ln-I grls should both know somletlling of milltllry work and every body at 18 should know how to handle <1 gun. llc declared that llc was not P. fighting parson and will preach peace wilcll this war is eluded as nov-ir before. He could turn the other cheek in B per- sonal dispute but this war, he salll, isa quarrel for justice and the freedom of the nations. Dr. Pringle ln his remarks referred to the fact tllat he has a son ill the trenches, and is proud of the fact. This young man of 6 feet 1% inches walkod 100 miles to enlist, is steady and self- restrained. does not drink or use pro- fane talk and yet is no molly-coddle. I-Ie would gladly give twelve sons, if Ile had them, to the cause_ After dealing for some time with thc cause of the war he said tllat he had lived In Belgium for ten months and seen towns and villages reduced to a mass of brick and mortar and people living in portions of packillg boxes. aoNDnNs1~u> ans.
