SMELT FISHING SEASON. —Mr. John McQuillsn. one of the largest llSll dealers in the province and na- turally interested in securing for the smelt fishers an extension of this years fishing season to compensate for the loss of time at the beginning of tho season. has been in communica- tion with Ottawa on the subject. There is. as is well known. an un- willingness in official circles to grant such extensions. There is the fear of creating precedents and there is_ also an idea that to extend the seasons be- yond the bounds laid down by the de- partment would be tantamount to an admission that the department had not laid down its bounds wisely. There are good and sufficient reasons this ycar h owevcr to ask for an extension of tho ‘smelt fishery season for ten or ilficen days beyond the prescribed bounds as this length oi‘ time had been cut off at tho beginning of tho season owing to tho milducss of the weather. lf lhcsc reasons were sub- mitted to the department by the ilsh- ormen themselves it is beliovud that an exception would be made this year in order to help tho fishermen. Mr. McQuillan advises fishermen through- out the province to write individually in the department at Ottawa. stating their reasons for thc request for an cx- tonsion.
