—_ ; csi Convicts Contributions to a Fair. SOLD MEMO- OMB OF THE CURIOUS THINGS TO BE POR THE BENEFIT OF THE O RBILLY Rial FUND (Boston Transcript.) About a year ago, James Jeffrey Roche, f the Pilot, received a letter from a con- viet in the State Prison, asking for a photo- | graph of John Boyle O’Rielly, and saying | that he wanted to make a crayon portrait of the dead poet: The picture was sent and with it a letter, and in replying to the latter, the prisoner asked Mr. Roche if be | would send him fifty copies of the Pilot Yhis reqnest was promptly granted, and in &@ few weeks Mr. Roche received a beautiful cane, which he shows with great pride, as it was made from the fitty papers which he had jsent te Concord. te @ pulp and then rolled into cardboard, from which circular pieces were cut, and these were strung upon a graduated steel core and subjected toa high pressure, after which the stick was planed and polished | and finished aiter the usual manner. Such +» unique gift was greatly prized by M: Roche, and with his letter of thanks he gent <o the prisoner a copy of the life of Mr. O'Reilly. The book was read by uearty ali the prisoners, and this led to an awakening of interest on their part in the bazaar soon to be held for the benefit of the (PReilly memorial, and they expressed a desire te contribute te it. The warden approved of the plan, and aecordingly three hundred men set aside their weekly allowence of tobacco, which was sold outside, and with the money the materiale which they needed were pur- ehased. Daring the spring and summer Mr Roche has received at different times many articles showing the skill and industry of these men. There are curious inlaid jewel and work boxes, photograph frames, easels, two beauti- ful models of sculls, hanging baskets and fruit dishes cf interlaced strips of wood, together with oil paintings anc three canes similar to the one already described. These and other contributions will be shown at the fair, which will be opened in April by a public weeting to be abaremed by many prominent men, inciuding Cardinal Gibbons and Senators Sherman and Gorman. ——_-——--——_ - o- ee eo Local Notices.
