We were ill them for enough for one trip. We have not had any casualties this trip; the most danger is going into them, for the bullets whistle around like everything, but then you get used to them. The trenches are pretty wet yet, but are not as bad as they were. Tile Ger- mans shell us every now and then; and believe me, when those six-inch- llowitzers and “Johnsons " start com- lllg around they make it pretty warm. You commence to think of how you have lived in the past. They shelled us for about half-an-hour the other day, and I doll't think any of the shells went fifty yards from us. Some ol' tllcm fell about tell yards away, that is getting handy enough for me. Tile first time I was ill the trenches was seventy-two hours. lt rained or snow- czl all tile time and I was nearly frozen, but sllffered from no bad effects. We are back i'or al rest now. We marched back, right l`ronl the trenches the nigllt before Inst; it was about twelve miles and l llcarly fell asleep on tile road.
