ZAR L ue re f 5 > = A “HUMOR” OF «HE C PAISN. The Teronto Globe says: The attempt to represent the Dominion as groaning under @ load of taxation is one of the humors of the present campaign. The greans are ¢ ynfined to a small coterie of the Opposition. its We donot know that the opposition has represented the country as “groan- ing” under a load of taxatior, but at the same time the increase in the taxation is a matter of vital import- ance. The people put the Liberals in power, for one thing, to reduce the taxes, which they promised to do. Mr. Fielding has brought the returns down to the close of the fiscal year ended 3eth June, 1900,and by comparison they make the fu lowing showing: Total Increase Taxes Over 1395. Scie chun dunes $25,446,178 RO od ek cick 28,648,662 $3,202,484 Sei «dbs bev eases 29,579,455 4,130,277 SEDs ovc'ns baceicobies 34,958,069 9,566,891 SOG io ks incase sa od 37,919.872 12,423,694 Rutel Tacreeee. .. « 2ccavaeens $29. 318,346 Now for a little mental arithmetic. The population of Canada is, say, 6 millions—it is really less. This means that for the year ended 3oth June, 1900, the people paid in actual taxes on the goods they bought, to support Tarte and Blair, $6,30 a head, or $31.- 50 for an average family of five per- sons, as compared with $4,24 a head, or $21.20 for an average family of five persons in 1895. The increase is $2.06 a _ head, $10.30 a family. The crops have been most abund- ant for several years in succession and the war in South Africa and the general prosperity have caused Eng- land to buy more largely than ever of our products. This has enabled the people to pay the enormous taxes im- posed by the Laurier Government: without very much groaning. But what of the years of lean crops and bad times, when the British workingman is not able to buy so fully? Looking to the future a little, is our government pursuing a safe policy, in cellecting, then spending, all this enormous revenue.—Moncton Times, or THE SWALLOWER, Brockville Times. She Was Pale and Languid Too Nervous to Sleep, and Dally Crew Weaker and Weaker—Dr. Chase’s Nerve Food Restored Health and Vigour. Mrs. E. McLaughlin, 95 Parliament street, Toronto, states:—"* My daughter was pale, weak, languid, and very neryv- ous. Her appetite was poor and change- able. She could scarcely drag herself about the house, and her nerves were completely unstrung. She could not sleep for more than half an hour at a time without starting up and crying out {n excitement. “As she was grcwing weaker and weaker I became alarmed, and obtain- ed a box of Dr. Chase's Nerve Food. She used this treatment for several weeks, and from the first we noticed a decided improvement. Her appetite be- came better, she gained in weight, the colour returned te her face, and she gradually became strong and well. I cannot say too much in favour of this wonderful treatment, since it has prov- en such a blessing to my daughter.” Dr. Chase’s Nerve Food is a blood- builder and nerve vitalizer of most un- vsual merit.
