For ov- er fifteen years Mr. Stewart had been a member of the Legislature and could not recall any session when attention had not been drawn to the passing of some one who at some time had been apub- lic servant; but he could not re- call any death which had struck the Province with such deep sor- row as that of the late Hon. They were the same qualities which were present in the person of his father, the late Hon. James A. lties in father and son was faith- fulness. The speaker felt privil- eged to have been associated with the late Minister, and to have the opportunity of paying this tribute to his memory. He extended deep- est sympathy to the bereaved fam- ilymon behalf of the House. Mr. J. P. McIntyre also expres- sed the sympathy of the House in the passing of Hon. Mr. Mac- Neiii, and his appreciation of that gentleman's character. He had handed over to Mr. MacNeill with- out any animosity the office of Minister of'Public Works; know- ing as he did that it was a. posi- tion which xvas both onerous and responsible. Mr. MacNeil, had ha been spared, would have filled the posi- tion with credit to himself and the government. As for the late Hon. James A. Mr. Maclntyre concluded by expressing the hope that the next appointee to the position would be "broad shouldered" enough to stand up against the ualCICIImI which the Opposition might see fit to make with regard to the Public Works department. Hon. Mr. Stewart expressed re- gret at the unavoidable absence of W. M. Lea. leader of the Op- position.
