Iuuicrr Distrtnery.—Deacon Joseph Flint (colored) of Halifax, is chaplain of his lodge and a prominent Temperance worker. The officers raided his premises on Tuesday and discovered a whiskey still in full blast in his cellar, which he had rented to some ‘‘ white gentlemen,” about whose movements he “knew nothing.” The affair has caused an excitement in the church and the temperance bodies. Henry Lawson, a young, unmarried man, employed at the Rolling Mill, at the N. 38. Iron Mines, was accidentally killed on Wed- nesday while cleaning out cinders near the Squeezer. It is supposed that the handle of his shovel caught in the wheel close by, caus- ing him to lose his footing, when he fell be- tween the edge of the wheel pit and szheel, wedging him into a narrow space. Death was instantaneous. Heavy Loss sy Fire,—We regret to learn that Mr. Joseph Campbell, of Dundas, had a new barn with all its contents destroyed ly fire on the 9th ulé. Mr. Campbell lost all his hay and seed grain, the’ greater part of his farming implements, and a quantity of boards and shingles. ‘This heavy loss was occasioned by some small boys kindling a fire near a pile of straw at the end of the building The loss is estimated at five hundred dollars.— Adv. Inrense excitement and much uneasiness exists in financial circles in Montreal, owing to announcement of failure of the prominent dry goods house of T. J. Claxton & Co., who voluntarily assigned with liabilities of about three quarters of a million of dollars on Wed nesday. Mr. James Gorpon BeNNerr has purchased a half interest in a thousand acres of land in Rover Valley a few miles north of Jerome Park. What Mr. Rennett intends to do with the land is not fully known, butt one of his re- presentatives said he will soon contract for a large number of buildings to be erected, and that in time he expects to have four thousand houses on the land. 5,754 Tons of coal were shipped from Pictou during last week, making the total shipments this season 21.286 tons, which are about 12,- 000 tons in excess of the corresponding period last year. Nearly all of these extra shipments have gone to Montreal. A much larger quan- tity have also gone over’ the railways, It is also reported that several important contracts have recently been made with Upper Province firms. Tue steamer “ Scythia” arrived at New York on Tuesday, and among her passengers were the Duke of Argyll, his son, Lord Walter Campbell and his two daughters, Lady Mary and Lady Elizabeth Campbell, with their attendants. After the Ducal party landed they entered a carriage which was in waiting at the depot and were driven tothe Windsor Hotel. He expected to return to New York and embark for Europe about July 16th.
