HASZARD’S GAZETTE. OCTOBER 26. to deck ; she has undergone a supervision that will satisfy the most timid, that there is nought to fear, and yet, when the overnment was asked for the report of those who had pro- nounced so deliiiitively upon the competency of the vessel which would have been to them their best defence, which would have shifted the onus of responsibility from their own shoul- d.-,;-s to that of the Cominissioners, they are compelled to reply “ that no such report in regard to the lairy Queen is in existence." llere isiudeed at humiliating disclosure, here isa confession of ineompctency, for we ma fairly assume that men who could not in an open, manly, oflieial manner contract for the services of a mail-boat, without exhibiting a shameful want of knowledge or u still more shameful dereliction of duty were not the men in any egree com tent to carry on the Government of the slund even in the least diflicult times. They were well aware, too, that they had been wanting in duty, and the tried to-we will not say entra pt. Bayile d, into an nfpprobation of the vessel, but substitute—eli- cit rom him some expression, doubtful it might be, but, with it little ingenuity, capable of being turned into a kind of approbation of the vessel. It iuightbe too, that the thought he would furbcar any expression of issent, and this they would have held forth as constitutingu kind of negative approbation, if we may use e term. Bo this as it me , the reckoned, as the saying is, without their lost. ‘apt Bayllcld who has earned for himself a reputation among nuuticnl men which will last as long as the coast of America. or the es of Canada are navi- tod by seamen and ships, was not the man likely to pronounce s hastv or imperfect judgment. Not only a sailor by profession, and an experien- sd one, _ but a highly educated and scientific man, capable of giving a reason for the opinion that should fall from his lips or his pen—-what did be any ? “ I disapprove of the principle upon which the engine is constructed; and as to the vessel, she is in river bout only. and not capable. from her build, of standing against the gnlus which she must necessarily encounter in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.” Here was the opinion of s man whose opinion was worth having, and whose name tc s document approving of the employment of the vessel, would have silenced the most perti- nacious caviller in the o position. Mark Mr. Pope's reply : “ It is too etc, we have engaged her lor three years." Why then ask Capt. Buy- l'ield‘s opinion at all, or rather, why was it not asked beforbl Who was there so lit and proper to consult! The conduct of Mr. Cules, and his colleziuues, in this, as in every thing else they have done, or attempted to do, is stained with that gross ignorance ofduty, or that carelessness and recklessness of consequences that is equally dis- graceful, whether we consider them as uteri or as ministers. Mr. Coles suys in his letter in the Gazette of Monday last —which came under our notice while writing this urtit-le—“ Many it year may roll on, ere the recollection of it (the loss of the Fairy Queen) be even partially obliwrct .” There can be no doubt 0 this, and as often as it is either mentioned or recollectcd, so often will he and his associates be char d as hsvin been acccssary to the untimely estructiono those who have by their means met an early and e. fearful end. ’I‘he meeting of Monday whatever Mr. Whe- lnn me say to the contrary, was conducted under t c circumstances, with singular temper and tuietness, nor would there have becna single out-break had not Mr. Theophilus Stew- art without the slightest necessity in the world chosen to anticipate that n olitical discussion was intended, and thus raised the feelin sof Lieut. Col. Gray, and Mr. \Vlielan‘s own oily and infatuation that brought upon him the well deserved rebuke of the Rev. Dr. Evans. We shall answer Mr. Whclun’s observations in our next. Sr. I-}i.r.tson’s Er-isuirii. Sl'.\'DAY ScnooL.—The anniversary of St. Elenuor's Sabbath School was celebrated on Monday the 12th inst. when the children were examined in the Hol Scrip- tures und the church catechism with Scripture prmfs—many of the scholars displayed eat readiness in answering the questions, on the whole was exceedingly creditable to the institu- tion. When the examinations were ended, the children were addressed by their Clergyman the Rev. Mr. Read, after which they retired with their leaders to the Court House, which was tastefully decorated with evergreens an flowers for the occasion. Tables were most plentifully sup lied with tea and cakes in eat variety, which bee ke the pains that had on taken by the friend: of the School to do honor to the occasion, whilst the happy countenances of the children expressed the yoy which they felt in meetin together to commemorate e anniversar 0 their Sabbath School. We heartil wish prosperit to the cause, and we think t at the eflorts w ich are made, to train the youthful mind, in the purelprinciples of the Gospel, ma be abundantly blessed, by God, for the sake 0 His dear Son our Saviour, whose sympathy for the Lambs of his flock, was most tenderly expressed, when He said “ Suler littlo Children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the Kingdom of God."—Com. 9- CRITICAL srni: or MADAM R.ssroNsi- BILITV.-—TIIll unfortunate lady is, we be- lieve, given over by all, but those ofher own household. C H I NA . The position of the combatants in China is unaltered. Vague reports have reached us of the progress of the insurgents, both in the directions of Pekiu and of anion, but nothing authentic can be reported. Fight- ing is going on at various inland towns, and at Ainoy a naval engagement has taken place between the Tartar and insurgent fleets. The Imperielists retired, and the in- surgents appear to have had the best of it. At Shanghai trade is in u frightful state. The exchange has risen to 6:. . rdollar, and the merchants have made an ineffectual endeavour to get the import duties on goods remitted; but the Chinese were not likely, in their present distress for money, to accede to such ti. proposul even if Sir G.’ Bunhum hud encouraged the application. Two American ships were lying below the city of Foochow, waiting for tens from the interior, but, owing to the prevailing trou- bles, none came down. The insurrections which are new agitating the whole country have produced a serious disturbance of the ordinary course of trade. The China Mail states, that they heard that an army, in three divisions, had actually been marching from N nnking for Peking; but on its becom- ing known that the Imperiulists were col- lecting a large force at the former city the insurgent forces were recalled. The un- durins at Canton have been busy forward- ing reinforcements of men and munitions of war by sea, and we are informed that about 600,0_00 piculs of gunpowder, and 2000 trained soldiers, 30 of whom can cast cun- non, huvc already been sent. 62 men were executed at Canton, under a strong guard on the morning of the 4th ; but we know not whether they were insurgents taken in the field, or part of ti. an of vagnbonds who recently laid a plan to fire the Provincial Trensurer’s ya-man. or oliictnl residence. An accomplice discovered the plot, and six men were seized on the premises with arms and gunpowder. A messenger had arrived at Canton with a letter from the Rebel Chief at Nurikin to a missionary. The messenger gave the following inl'ormntiou.—'I‘he Ion haired brethren, he says are between liiur and five thousand; the fighting men from thirty to forty thousand, while the entire host, men, women and children, in Nanking and its vicinity, is estimated at a hundred thou- sand. The plunder they have taken has been immense, and as there is no want of money amongst them, numbers are expec- ted to flock to their camp; their purpose, he says, being to remain at Nanlting until they can muster 90,000 fighting men of whom 60,000 will he left to defend and retain that position, and 30,000 be marched on Pekin. Surnames or EMIGRANTS on run Pi.iiNs.—The Sioltiyou (California) .Moun- loin Herald, of Saturday, August 27, con- tains the following information :—“ We learn from Mr. Hoard, who went out to meet the emigrants, and returned last eve- ning, that there are ei hteen families on their way to this place. r. He is an od resident, and well known to many of our people, and we ho our friends will prepare a supply of provi- sions immediutely. The train can be met at or about Klnmnth Luke. here are about fifty women, young ladies and old, in the train. It is highly necessary that they should be met before they come to the road, in order to ivc them warnin not to take the Rogue river route. Mr. curd passed another train of several w ons, and two amilies, on the Shasta river. They will be in town to-day or to-morrow." CLOSING or -riis Crivsni.
