Qnrlittotowun. a: I. i nrsusl or r. c. 1.161, m sum (Continued) Hon. John E. Sinclair: Individual , cases have been referred to. both . this year and last, in the discussion . of the Act. I do not think that we i can get very far by basing our 0P- ~ inlons on certain cases. I could | read affidavits that I have under, my hand to show that many of the - statements made in this Chamber I have not been based on the facts’ put on record by applicants before the board of review. I think it is unfair to make those references. l. . do not think we shall improve th situation by going into them. I dl , ask some honourable members be- fore the committee t-o give us their authority for the statements they were tnaklng, but they declined. The statements were not thrashed out there. and I think very little benefit would accrue from bringing them up here. In a statement made before the committee the Director E 1 of a bride, silver Plates. of the Farmers’ Creditors Arrange- ment. Act was accused of making n. false return; and I think that statement was repeated by >ille honourable member from King's lHOll. Mr. Hughes) this afternoon Now I want to say to the House, in fairnem to the Department of Finance and the officers of that department, that the return which was made stated clearly that, cer- tain cases mentioned were simply examples. and that there were ntanv others of the same kind in the province of Prince Edward Is- land. Hon. Mr. Hughes: What, senator is the honourable member referring to? There happen to be two of us. l-Ion. Mr. Sinclair: Does the hon- ourable gentleman refer to what was said in the House or in the committee? Hon, Mr. Hughes: I am referring to what you are saying. Hon. Mr. Sinclair: I may say tn the honourable gentleman that two senators made the statement, one in the committee and the oth- er in the House. Hon. Mr. Hughes: What state- ment was it? n. Mr. Sinclair: I think it is an air to go into individual cases. but I want to say that the state- ment of the Director was a correct statement. Lt the honourable gen- lemen who have been branding it as incorrect had desired when the committee was sitting. they could have had information from the Di- rector. In declaring in the House afterwards that the statements were false. without having taken the op- portunity of securing the informa- tion. the honourable gentlemen were going entirel too far. From the information have had, both in Prince Edward Island and here, I am quite justified in saying that the Statement of the Director of the Farmers’ Creditors Arrangement Act. is a fair and true statement, and representative of the cases he mentioned. Hon. Mr. Hughm: Does the hon- curable gentleman refer to the memorandum read by the honour- able leadc on this side of the House? Hon. Ml’. Sinclair: I am refer- ring to the quotation made in the committee. ‘ Hon. lvfr. Hughes: Are you refer- ring to the memorandum? I want to get. down to particulars. Hon. M21: Sinclair: I have the statement here, if the honourable gentleman is anxious for it. I am glad indeed that he wants to get down to the papers. I have the exact statement here. Hon. Mr. MacArthur: I will give it to you. Hon. Mr. Sinclair: The state- ment read as follows: “Many eases of hardship have been reported in this connection. The following are two sample cases." 'I‘hen the cases were mentioned. That is the statement I refer to. If I understand aright, it. is in connection with the sample cases mentioned that the veracity of the Director Wu questioned. If I am not correct, I shall be glad to be contradicted. Hon. Mr. Hughes: Do you en- dorse that statement? Hon. Mr. Sinclair: D0 endorse the statement made in ard to $ two cases? Hon. Mr. Hughes: The statement referring to Prince Edward Island which was prepared by the Direc- tor in Ottawa and read by the honourable the leader of the House. Hon. Mr. Sinclair: I do endorse it. and I know it is correct. If the honourable gentleman wishes to know what cases were referred to, I can tell him. He knows the peo- ple. They live in his own locality.
