The Essriy Experiments in i003 Dr. Charles lil. Saunders was nppointed to the station ns cercailst. lie inherited with thc position the ex- perimental dita and the various strains. He at once commenced a re- in-lection in the hope that he could isolate a strain which would meet the cry of the western wheat growers for ri \vheat that would rlpen earlier than lted Fife. No general dn the biittleileld ever martialed his forces with more dz-tailed accuracy than did Dr. Saund- ers. For mouths he plodded patiently onwards, meeting with reverses of ev- ery turn. Samples of grain from iill the wheat _growing countries of' thc world were before him and nlimerouii new varietlas produced by |:rass-brsed- ing. Out of this nia`ss Dr.`Sauriders discovered the precious grains that contained such potentislities. bytaatc and chewing. The grains that attract- ed his attention when removed from his mouth showed a light color. and their elasticity showed a gluten coa- tmt that surprised him. The precious little grains were planted out from s single head in the autumn of 1008. Twelve plants came_i|p. and by 190| a little harvest was gathered that. was placed in an envelope. This was the beginnings of the mighty discovery that was soon to tax the elevators of the continent. ¢W9“il‘~three pounds of seed available. Part of this was sent to Saskatchewan. and although the _season there was is had one for grain, the little plots of Ziiiiriiiiis lived up to their reputation. From this little harvest seed was sent to Brandon. Man., and there did sston ishiiigly well.
