ne THE DAILY EXAMINER, : Alexondra Notes. One of our good neighbors of Alexandra found a parcel near his residence recently, and upon examination it proved to be brown sugar, containing strychnine. Re- flection has been cast upon his next neigh- bor. Nothing should be left undone to discover the guilty party. Two of our enterprising farmers, Messrs. Benjamin and Wallace Wood, have char- tered a schooner to load produce for foreign markets. We wish them every success. The commodious dwelling house of Mr. James Jones is nearing completion, and re- flects great credit on the builder, Mr. John Jones, of Fall River, Mass. Next comes the handsome and neatly ecoustructed cottage of Mr. Lemuel Wood. It has been erected ou a beautiful situation, and the workmanship is in every way first class, and shows that the builder, Mr Theo. Brehaut, thoroughly understands his business ALFIR. —- -o- oe British Politics. ln the House of Commons .a ago Smith, Government Leader, notice that the Government would on Mon- day present a bill asking a vote of £5,000,- few days gave 000 for the extension of the Ashbourne Act. Smith intimated a short winter ses- sion. Several measuaes would be abandon- ed, including the Tithes Bill, the Imsh Drainage Bill and the bill for the creation of a Minister of Agriculture. Gladstone vave notice that on Monday, when the motion was made he would, if the proposal meant an addition of £5,000,000 to the £5,000,000 already spent, move an alternative to the effect that the House should proceed to deal with the question of arrears and apply to Ireland the principle already applied with such great advantage in the case of the Scotch crofters. When the estimates fur prisons came up for consideration, Dillon moved a reduc- tion of the salary of Dr. Bar, as a protest a6sinst his conduct in Dundalk Jail. Dr. Clark (Radical) believed Dr. Barr a disgrace to his profession, and Labouchere said Dr, Barr had been directly responsible for two deaths The motion to reduce was negst ived, L116 to OF. ————-- @O OQ Notes and Clippings Dr. Barr's salary ~** It is a great pity,” says our esteemed contemporary, the Erangelical Churchman, ** chat internal difficulties of the churches cannot be kept out of the papers.” Whereupon the Empire suggests that it would be well to begin by keeping them out of the churches. the —Comparing the running expenses of the Grand Trunk and English railroads, Sir Henry Tyler, in his address to the Grand Trunk shareholders, made the state- ment that the wages of mechanics in Cana- da were 33 per cent. higher than in Eng- land, and the cost of materials from 24 to 72 per cent. higher. Outside of these two items, which are closely allied to their causes, the charges of the Canadian line compare favorably with those in Great Britain. —Beecher once said:—‘*I can show am- bitious men, who seek political preferment, their types on the seashore. There you will see old worthless sticks of drft-wood come rviling in on the crest of some wave; these are now the types of political men coming into power. In the course of an heur or so they are sucked out again into the sea by the ebbing and flowing of the tide; then they are types of political men going out of power, and whether coming in or going out they are merely old decayed logs, which are fit for nothing, not even to be burned.”’ —While the German court was in mourn- ing for the late Emperor Frederick, his own son, the present Emperor, went off ona jollification tour among the other courts of Europe. It is not surprising that some comment was made on this, and other mat- ters connected with the memory of the late Emperor. This has excited the wrath of Emperor William, and he has according ordered that the press shall make no fur- ther reference to his father’s name or his family affairs. A cat, it is said, may look upon a king, but the German people, it ap- pears, are to be blind to the goings on of their Emperor. -The Cunarders are doing a smashing business of late. Two collisions in one day, each-side of the Atlantic, would seem to be crowding matters. The extra- ordinary way in which one-third of a steam- ship was cut off by one of the Cunarders, ind sent afloat on its own account, while the other two-thirds was anchored with cargo all right, indicates great proficiency in this sort of thing onthe part of the Cunarder, or wonderful vitality in the severed ship. one on -~Mr. Phelps, the American Minister, in a speech before the members of the Glasgow Bar a few'days ago, said that noth- ing in the administration of justice in Great sritain was more excellent than the prompt and effective manner in which the laws were executed, but the legal proceedings here he thought were too expensive. D »ubtless the two branches of the legal profession in Great Britain were conspicu- ously successful, but the blending of both orders worked well in America and Canada, and why should it not work equally well in Great Britain ? _—_—____———-—B coo aD -oe oo The Americans are without question a go- ahead and wide-awake class of people, and generally a step in advance of their Canadian cousins; and with the worty and turmoil of active business, and mad haste to get rich, they are fast undermining their health and making physical wrecks of themselves. It is said touat “‘prevention is better than cure,” and we believe it, but the most of us never think of prevention until need of a cure comes, Our American cousins saw the need of omething to build up the system some- thing to soothe and quiet the over-taxed nerves, and they are becoming wide-awak« enough to leave rum and quack mixtures alone, and instead are using celery as food and medicine combined; and it is enormous th celery they consnme. We beara great ado about a medicine called ** Paine's Celery Compound.” We know noth- ing about it, but please note it is called ‘erery Compound,” it is significent to say the least of it.
