Other more stirring and critical events have so engrossed 'the Cana- dian public that comparatively little attention has been given to the latest phase of the Alaskan boundary ques- tion as developed by Sir Louis Davies' recent conference with the Imperial authorities. \Ve learn that the Minis- ter of Marine before leaving England had succeeded in quite disabusiug/the minds of imperial statesmen of any credence they may have given to charges of unfairness on Canada’s part. A section of the press of t-he ,United States had put forward from ’day to day the statement that the _Dominion had made grasping and .unreasonable proposals that could not ibe entertained, and these statements had to some extent induenced public opinion in England. l Canada’s position as set forth by Sir Louis Davies in his address at the banquet given him before leaving England was summarised as follows: (1) An unconditional arbitration ol the whole Alaskan boundary dispute; l (2) Arbitration on terms similar to the Venezuelan arbitration ; or 1 (3) Arbitration on the understanding :that the Americans keep Dyes and `Skagwsy.il they will give te Canada Pyramid harbor and adjacent territery, 'thus giving usa harbor trout on the 'Lynn Canal. In the meantime a temporary boundary has been agreed upon at each of the three passes leading from the Lynn Canal into the interior. This agreementis made without pre- jiidice to the just claims of either party, and serves to give- time for furthes- negotiation without needless friction or trouble between the two icountries. It is most earnestly to bchoped that one or other of the proposals above cited may be accepted by the Washington Government. , We greatly regret to announce the 'death of Sharif Gaffney, of Prince Fusiliers and the Royal Dublin Fusi- liers in the war despatches. Six companies of the Royal Irish, as our despatchea tell, were made prisoners in Monday’s disastrous battle. The names of the captured and wounded not the Royal Irish that Lieutenants C. A., Hensley, S. L. Patterson and I G. N. Corey, all of Kingston Royal Military College, are serving. Licu-" tenant Hensley isa Charlottonian.
