Compton. noted physic- ist. - A tentative picture, as are all portrayals of scientific phenomena comparatively recent in man's ken, Dr. Compton said. Two findings support the picture. One is that the intensity of the days is greater at the magnetic poles of the earth than at thcqmag- netic equator. their intensity apparently increases continuously at higher altitudes. Both observations are the result of tests made by Dr. Compton at w1de!y scattered sites over the western hemisphere, and both, he said, support the hypothesis that cosmic rays are electrical in nature particles of non-electric radiation, such as heat and light waves. ' In accounting for the varying in- tensity oi the rays at the magnetic equator and the magnetic pole, Dr. Compton said the earth is appor- ently acting as a huge magnet. Hurl s handful of iron filings toward a sphere magnetized at: the poles and assuming the magnetism is power- ful enough, the filings would tend to concentrate at these poles. In this manner ,do cosmic rays approach the earth. tossed from some un- known "fist" in interstellar realms, and upon reaching the magnetic lines of the planet. follow them to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Australian Doctor Journeys Eight Hours In Skies To r-zaeh an injured skier at Hotbam tame, Victoria, Aus- tralia, s. doctor travelled for eight hours on skis st the encl of a busy day. What made his journey ten time! more hard was the fact: that. no ski boots were available and he had t0 weer qrdlnary walking shoes, a greet lmndicap for even the most accomplished skier. . And Dr. Langdon was not a good skier but‘. he made the trip uncom- plainingly and attended to the pa- tient directly he arrived at the scene of the accident. The injured man was E. Soder- steen, member of the New South Wales ski team who had hurt lfm- self jumping. ' NEW DIAMOND CLl l‘ The newest diamante clasp, which can be trnnasfcrrcd from n. blouse to a. hat or costume oixscarf in a second, is certainly a useful addi- tion to the Jewel-case. The brooches beautifully made, are about an inch and a. half in diameter. and they are arranged st the back with 1'00!‘ little fronds attached to springs, and these clip in wherever desired. As e. buttonholc on a costume coaii they are extremely smart anad un- usual. iii- hfinnrd‘: Linlrnent rnhs out Poin- MIBTION SALE I will sell by Public Auction on Wednesday, Oct. 19th, 1932. i116 Homestead Farm, contriiulnr 76 acres and other lands, of the lots ‘Donald McKinnJn, liigiiiic-id also all the stock and mcvcabics on tha premises.
