A Canadian doctress, Miss Howard, con- nected with the Methodist Episcopal Mis- sion at Pekin, China, is'reported to hold a high position in the capital of the Flowery Land. A woman was recently dragged under a railroad train at Newcastle, Eng., and killed in consequence of shaking hands with a friend at a car window as the train moved on. Margaret Smith sued the Cunard Steam- ship Company in New York for $25,000 damages for injuries caused by a berth above her falling upon her, while she was a passenger in one of the “steamers. The jury awarded her $2,000. Mr. Frank L. Gundlack, well known in journalist circles in Montreal, died in Lon- don, Unt., en Saturday night from the bursting of a blood-vessel in the head. He had been struck on the head with a cane the previous night by a stranger with whom he had sonie altercation. A Nororrovs Famuy.—The woman Armour, lately convicted of larceny at Ain- herst, is one of a most notorious family. For some years stores and dwellings have been burglarized in Pugwash, and sufficient evidence to convict was not forthcoming. The robbery at Thompson’s Station was so brazen-faced that they were at last overtaken in the toils, and now the whole family will be united in bonds stronger than brotherly love, and where, at least. ‘“‘thieves don’t break out and steal.” We refer to Warden Flynn’s com- modious apartments on the North West Arm. The Police Magistrate at Clerkenwell Court, Lendon, has been called upon to decide the knotty question whether a man who gves into a dining-room and eats a din- ner for which he cannot pay commits a fel- ony or only incurs a debt. In the case be- fore His Worship the defendant was very indignant that he should be charged with stealing his dinner. He contended that the affair was a matter of business, and that he was simply responsible to the land- lord for the value of the dinner he had eaten. ‘he Magistrate has taken time to consider |:is decision. James A, Smith was put under bonds at Pittsfield, Mass.,in the sum of $400, on Friday, for trial by the superior court, for peddling a scurrilous sheet called the ‘‘Tomahawak. Other peddlers of the paper are to be arrested. Judge Tucker decided that the paper was ‘‘indecent and immoral” under the statutes of 1862, and the penalty for selling it is from two years in jail to five years in the State prison. In Halifax, re- cently, the vender of this sheet was fined by the Volice Magistrate. Hundreds of copies are openly sold in St. John, but the agents are undisturbed in their ‘‘business. ” A ‘‘house-warming’ of an uncommon character was that which took place at Frelighsburg, P. Q. Mr. Landsberg, a well-known merchant of that place, who was burned out last summer, built a new brick store 60 x 80 feet, with plate-glass front and Mansard roof, and his friends re- solyed to give him a “ house-warming.” From all quarters within 25 miles around eamo 1,100 people, and the three flats of the building were made reception room, re- freshment room and ball room, fer the oe- easion. Under the heacing of ‘‘ what one man has accompltshed in a country village,” the St. John News devotes two columns to a description ef the ball end supper, and to eulegy of the merchant who was the subject of what it terms the inauguration party. A Terrie Tare.—An old colored woman named Cook, gave a statement be- fore the Halifax Stipendiary, on Saturday morning, which made a newspaper report- | er’s hair stand on end (at first), She said : ‘“T’se want a warrant for Sinclair. Dey murdered my nephew and grandchild and cut off dere legs, and trow’d dem in de alleyway. And Scot was in it, too.” ‘© All murdered ?” said the Stipendiary. ' “Yes, and another one too. And de neighbors aint no better. Der bodies 1s dere now.” Then it transpired that the poor old woman Was crazy, and a first-class sensation was spoiled. —_—- —+--—— - @¢ Deo @&»—- —--—— -- —_ false impression. Hear what a Reverend Gentleman swys of the Constitutional Remedy. T. J. B. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont, :— Dear Sitr—It is now two years since your ‘Constitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced tome. I have waited this eng to ses if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be ‘‘too good oh true.” 1 was afflicted in my head tor years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. ‘The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when J had used two botties and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave te make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littlefield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other. T. J. B. Harorne, Dominion Agent, Brock- ville, Unt.
