Harmony .| 9 534 ano the days flew by on golden Wings brinving nearer the hour when Paith mus! return to the city and the tou ol the schoolroom. What was her coo sternation, One morning to 1ecelye 2 terse dote informing her that the schoo} board which employed her had deter- mined upon a retrenchment of expen- ses for the coming season, and had pros @eeced to discharge a number of the teachers, herself amosg them. Poor Faith 2 Though the confinement of the sehvolroom was irksome to her, she was nevertheless, dependent upon her situa- tien for a livelihood, and it was taking away from her her sole support. Fora time she was stunned by the iv- telligence and knew notin which to turn. Then, more trouble came. A small sum which she and her mother had contrived to save between them was lost by the tailure of thebankin whichit was placed and it seemed truly “that troubles never come singly,” for (and that was worst of al!) Mrs Lyndsey health began to suffer, and Faith thought, with & sudidew shock ef grief and terror, that her mother might be taken away. These were dark days to Faith , and had it net been for Max—brave, true pat ent Max—she would havecome near des pairing. 1c was ono evening in early axtuinn. A bright wood-fire roared and crackled on the broad hearth; for the eid house which had belonged to Aunt Patience was built with great, roomy fireplaces. Mis. Lyndsey and Faith and Max, who hut dropped in for the evening, were gathered around a large table drawn up betore thetireplace, and strewn with books, and werk. For Faith’s only dependence now was in her needle work. ‘Times are hard with the young physi- cian ; aad he had, at last, made up his miod to tear himself from homo and all he hekl dear, and go out inte the new western country, and'build up a practice. He loved Faith too well to willingly subject her to the trials and hardships of his new liie. No! He would go ferth alone~—ani work se hard, and stvive so earnestly, that some day he would be ready for his wife, and [aith, he knew would be true. “ Bat [ shail be old and gray by that time !’ smiled Faith through her tears. ‘I shall love you just the same my darling ! the young man answered; aad somehow, Faith could net doubt him to save her life! So, sitting there before the bright fire the three discussed the proposed depar- ture; till, at last, Faith dropped her teas-dimmed eyes upon her work, and quiet fell ever all. ‘ Mamma,” said the young girl sud- denly, after a long, theughtful silence, ‘what do you suppose Aunt Patiance did with her money ? Mrs. Lyadsey smiled. ‘I’m sure I have no idea, dear,’ she answered, ‘1 censidered that subject ex- hausted long ago. It was thought, however that she converted her ready money to jewels. I remember hearing her say that diamonds were the only safe investments which never depreciate, and that stones of yalne are never drugs in the market.’ ; Imagine Aunt Patience bedecked with diamonds!’ laughed Faith, mischievous- ly. ‘ Max, just imagine, if you can,the antiquated lady whose portrait hangs yonder attired in jewels, and a fashion- able ball-dresa | Faith langhed again, and the others could not resist the contagion. For Faith, with her cheerfulness, bore her erosses with fortitude. [ Concluded in Our next, | — Remedy for Hard Times. Stop spending so much on fine clothes, rich food and style.
