Surprise birthday parties are gett- ing so frequent around Pownal, that it is almost a surprise not to be surprised, on those occasions. But a genuine surprise was sprung on the genial hostess of the Forester House on Wednesday the 17t.li inst, it being the anniversary or Mrs. Carver'a birthday. About 7.30 a simultaneous arrival of some intimate friends, stormed the Citadel, and were ' soon showering hearty congratulations. Delight at meeting so many friends 111. a bunch. soon overcame the sur- prise, and all were welcomed, and given the freedom of the house. A- mong the merry ‘ party was Lincoln Irving, who very thoughtfully graph, and as Mr. Irving has a. great number of the best records procur- ablc, needless to say, that he held the closest uttention of all present, receiving hearty applause and numer- ous encores. Then another friend, with equal thoughfulness, brought his violin, and it would _be hard to find the equal of either the violinist or violin and when accompanied by the master hsnd of W. E. Smith( who is himself a skilled violinist) on the Piano, made a combination that it would be hard to beat and the perfect'~and entrancing music, was listened to with rapturous de- light. About 0.30 the hotise was called to order rind by request A. A. Moore came forward and made n lengthy and highly complimentary speech euloglstlc of the many good qualities of head and heart of the amiable hostess and then on behalf ofthe admiring friends present pre- sented Mrs. Carver with a beautiful and costly genuine seal haind bag with .German silver mountlnge, and initial letter. Mrs. Carver, in her usual fellcitous manner, warmly thanked the friends for their kind re- membrance and beautiful -and useful companying lt; and hoped that all would be spared to meet on many such joyous occasions. At 10.30 the gong sounded for supper and soon a jolly and hearty company surrounded the ample table. The menu- was in keeping with the excellent Table D'- Hotel of the Forester House. An en- joyable time was spent around the festive board with pleasant joke, amd hearty merriment. Then with 9, feel- ing of fullness, the music and gsiolzy was resumed and at an early hour, good byes were said, every one satis- fied that it was a "royal good time." ::Gastlle Soap (white and mottled) imported direct from France and con- taining the highest possible percent- age of pure olive oil.
