Thirty four years ago the govern
‘ments of the three maritime provi-
doubtly have accomplished this
purpose but for the arrival of the
Canadian delegates On the scene with
the larger and more ambitious plan
of a. general union of all British
North America. The latter plan
_was adopted with much hesitation by
the eastern provinces and with
what results we have seen _
From that hour we have been
subjected to the will of the people of
the large central provinces. They
,forced upon us a high tariff, contrary
to our wishes and interests. We
_were natural free traders, but we
_gave up our most cherished fiscal and
'economic traditions at the will of our
.new masters. They taxed us to
build the Intercolonial Railway, that
they might have an outlet to the sea,
|to build a. transcontinetal Railway,
that Ontario and Quebec might open
new markets for their manufactures
in the North Vlfest and on the Pacific
coast. They called for millions more
to deepen the old Canadian canals
for their traffic, not for ours. e

interest of Ontario and Quebec, and
taxed beyond all precedent in our
history, grew poorer and our people
