Market By Frank MucMillen, Associated Press Financial Writer (By Guardian's Special Wire) NEW YORK, April 1, — Quiet strength springing from bullish cor- porate news pushed stocks forward today on a. wide front, General Motors was a prominent leader, advancing ii point to 68%, a new 1936 high and the best since late 1929. U. S. Steel was up 25/1 at 675i and- Bethiehem rose 1% to 577i. Midland Steel products ad- vanced 2% l0 45%. In the industrial section the best forward movement was encountered, and in the Associated Press average of 30 such stocks there was a rise of 1.5 points to 84.4, the highest level of the year. The average of 60 equities rose 1.1 points, the best one-day advance since March l7, to 63.3. The greatest advance of the day was scored by J. I. Case which went up 10% points to 163% on reports that payment of preferred dividend arrears would be considered. Direc- tors meet tomorrow in Racine, Wis. The Canadian list displayed buoy- ancy. Distillers Seagrum jumped two points to 27".- and McIntyre bounded 2% to 431;. International Hydro Electric Preferred ended up 2 at 12% and Brazilian showed ll one- point advance at 13. Others were ahead fractionally with the excep- tion of Hollingcr, oil’ ‘i. Stocks of the non-ferrous metal corporations were boosted by news of European buying and the belief that the International cartel wolrd extend the production curtailment agreement another year. The volume of trading amounted to 1.749.100 shares compared with 1,093,270 shares on the previous day. Although the session was the largest of the week, the total was still com- paratively small. _ Because of the recently light volume which limits l commissions, arrangements were ;_ made for the sale of a New York Stock Exchange seat at 8150.000, a decline of 524.000 from the previous sale. Nickel, volume leader with turn- over of more than 3,000 shares, met late profit taking but held most of an early gain, finishing up it at 49%. Noranda was ahead about a. point at 53, highest in iiveyears, while Smelters spurted three points. Scanty shares of Distillers Sea- grams were absorbed rapidly at 28. two points better than the last board-lot sale. Scattered buying brought fractional gains for Can- adian Industrial Alcohol, National Breweries and Breweries Preferred. Seasonal demand was believed responsible for a bullish "rush that boosted Dominion Bridge, Canada. Cement and Gypsum lime fraction- ally. Steel of Canada preferred was a minor weak spot. Utilities were dabbled with lightly but a fractionully firmer trend ruled at the finish for Brazilian ‘Traction, B. C. Power and Shawinigan. Can- adian Hydro-Electrlc Preferred slip- ped ‘>6. Royal Bank of Canada advanced a couple of points to 179 while Com- merce, Nova Scotla and Canada re- mained stationary. b Sales 23,702 shares; bonds $8,500. BUYS COAL COMPANY PROPERTY (C, P.
