Detachmenis from the several batteries of the P. E. Island Brigade of Garrison Artillery have been, for some time past, actively engaged in preparing themselves tocompete for the prizes offered to the garrison batteries of the Dominion, by the Dominion Artillery Association, in a shift- ing ordnance competition, and on Friday | and Saturday evenings of last week the | detachments from Nos. 1 and 2 Batteries competed, Brigade Major Freeland acting as umpire. The shift was as follows:—A 24-pounder gun, of 50-ewt., lying »pon two short skids, twelve feet in rear of a plat- form measuring twelve by eighteen feet, in the centre of which stood its carriage, was taker completely around the platform, by the left, and returned to its original position on the short skid—a distance of some 150 feet. It was then carried forward and mounted upon its carriage, the carriage left in its original position, and all stores clear of the platform. This was done by the detachment from No. 1 Battery in the incredibly short space of two minutes and thirty seconds, No. 2 Battery’s detachment being only seven seconds behind them— their time bemg two minutes and thirty- seven seconds. Both detachwents were in splendid form and worked admirably From the word go, until the gun rested on its trunnions in its carriage, the men Pennsylvania RR. track, below Retreat Station. The tracks of a bear were plainly distinguished and the man’s clothing and person gave evidence of a horrible struggle. The body is supposed to be that of a track walker employed by the railway company The Chinese Difficulty. Lonpon, Dee, 29. A Vienna correspondent says he has learned from a trustworthy source that the Russian and American Goveruments have advised the Chinese Governments, through their representatives at Pekin, to recall the Chinese troops from Backinah and leave the Black Flags to their fate. sii ines Fatal Fire. Atontson, Kan., Dee. 30. Last night a fire broke oat in the house of Chas. Estites, agent of the Missouri Pacific Railway. Mr. Estites’ wife and child perished in the flames, and he himself was seriously burned. The origin of the fire is believed to have been the explosion ofa gasoline machine in the cellar. The building was totally destroyed France and China, Lonpon, Dec. 29. A Paris despatch to the Exchange Tele- worked with the greatest steadyness, and without the slightest confusion. ices man knowing his work and doing it with a will. | The gun seemed fairly to fly over the skids, | and the skids over the gun, so quickiy were | they placed, and so quickly did the gun | traverse the space. The celerity, ease and | ateadyness with which this shift, a rather difficult one, as great care had to be used | to avoid the platform in taking the gun| round, speakes volumns for the drill of | these batteries. We hear that the time | made by the Kingston Cadets, who also competed in this shift, was three minutes and forty-nine seconds. Both our!a terics} have, therefore, beaten them by over a| minute. Nosmall victory to make over a| permenent force, who have all the means and | appliances necessary in contests of this| kind, immediately at their hand. We have not yet learned the time made by any other | batteries that may have competed, but we | think we may safely congratulate No. 1| Battery in having again upheld its proud position of being the premier Battery of | the Dominion, and No. 2 as being a good | second. This latter Battery, it should be | remembered, is composed aimost exclusively of recruits, this fall being the first time they have had any drill what-| ever, in drills of this nature. No. 3 Battery (Georgetown) compete this evening, shoWilng great pluck on their part, sceing that they have serious 4ifficul- ties to overcome, and very few of the oppor- tunities for drill and practice afforded to their sister batteries of the Dominion; and when we consider the great efficiency this briva e has attained, we certainly think it | is due to them that they should receive | vreater encouragement and support on the i part of the Department of Militia and Defence than they do A rifled gun or two should be added to their armament, or at least an opportunity given them of learning their use Halifax or Quebec during a portion of their annual drill, As an instance of the want of atiention paid to their wants, we may state the fact that No. 2 mattery. th igh some time enrolled, are Stilt without yreat coats,—a more import- ant part of a soldier's outfit than even his tunic We give below the names of the detachment from each battery: No, 1 BATTERY.
