H. Hillsboro, N. B. Come | I cc eee = SEPTEMBER 1, 1900, WELCOME ! A WARM WELCoMm wil!, we are sure, be extended by the people of Prince Edward leland to Sir Charles Tupper, Mr. Foster and Mr. Hugh John McDonald. Though our farmers are now busy at the harvest they will not fail to crowd the meetings at which theee distinguished genilemen will speak upon the great issues of the day. Hach is celebrated for bis elcquence as well as for his practical statesmanship. Sir Charles Tupper has by deed, as well as word, impressed his pame end person- slity upon all parta of Canada. Systems of education ersbling the youth of every race, class and denomination to partici- pate in the blessings of learning, great railways, crossing Provipce and continent, extending to all the means of eaey and cheap Communication and transportation acd opening to unnumbered immigrants our wide and fertile prairies and our grand mountains with their unlimited wealth of forest and of mine,—these are some of the fruits of Sir Charles Tupper’s labors. Fortunately Sir Charles has lived long enough to live dowu the slanders by which his opponents have in the past sought tc_lesgen his influence, and to en- joy the credit und esteem due to his great abilities and his high character. Many persons are even yet opposed to him, but all men, in their hearts, honour him ; and when he shall have swun for the people of Canadathe great boon of Preferential Trade with the Mother Country and the British Empire at large, he will have capped the climax of a grand career of struggle, development and suecess, His able lieutenant, Mr. Foster, is well known tothe people ofthis Proviace as one of the most laborious and talented of our younger statesmen, and one of the very best parliamentary and platform orators in this country. Among those who were with Sir John Thompson, specially selected by the best judge of men in his age and country to enter the Liberal-~Cun- servative cabinet and become a Liberal- Conservative leader, Mr Foster hae justi> fied and is continuing to justify the hopes and expectations entertained by: his friends. [f his life should be epared he will bave much to do in developing and building ap the cuperstructure of the great norther,, Britich vationelity of wkich the founda* tions have been to well laid: Mr. Hugb John Mecdonald, Premier of the Province of Manitoba, is personally kaown tobut few among us. But he will be welcomed because he is ths son of his father, the great Sir John, and because be has thusfarin hie political career, sbovo that hie desire to be honest in his dealings with and on behalf of the peo- ple. Since he has entered vpeon the trust ‘imposed by the people of Manitoba, he bas repudiated corrupt ard secret bargains made by his predecessors in cflice, the no» torious Mr. Greenway and company, and has taken pains to fulfil his preselection pledges. In this regard he bas set an ex- ample for our politicians of both parties, and bas compelled the admiration of the staunchest Liberals in the country. The visit of such a man as Mr Hugh John Macdonald will, upon this account, be the more interesting tothe people of Prince Edward “eland, who have lately seen 80 many instances of political corruption ani deception. Sir MacKenzie Bowell and Senator [THB DAILY am preceded him. His record as @ politician is of the best. Senator O’Brien is not 06 well known, but everyone will be glad to ree him. A WARNING, We direct the attention of the prope™ authorities to the dangerous and disgrece- ‘ful cendition in which the roads are kept by the contractor for laying the sewer pipes. We have heard repeated com- plaints regarding the unsafe way that the trenches are left at night, It appears that the rights of the public are of little con- sideration and that rothing short of an- other serious accident will wake up the authorities, Last night on the Malpeque Road a trench running acro3s the road was left unprotected and it isa wonder that some person did rot drive into it. To make the matter worse the light was placed at the end of the drain that was opened along the road, which was simply an invitation to go to the side and drive into the trench run- ning at right angles. We trust that measures will at once be taken to protect the righte of the travelling public, even if by doing so the contractor will be kept in his place. If these measures are no! taken a serious if pot fatal accident is almost sure to happen, with the result that the city or some person will be mule ted in heavy damages. +2 — i> 2-2 > RECEPTION ON TUESDAY.
