face. looked over to where Bowers
was _working and causally remarked:
f'Marse Duke, what fo’ you workin’
down here with us nlggers; youse got
too much sense."
“A fellow won't_get very far these
days." he reasoned, “unless he makes
a start. I'm going into the grocery
business." » .
And he did. Today, Bowers’ 43 stor-
es sell nearly half the groceries in
Memphis, amounting in round figures
to about $2,000,000 annually. Not had
for a laborer. is it? And yet there are
people who will insist that the day of
opportunity is`past.
"A man." said Mr. Bowers, pushing
back a stack of correspondence deal-
ing with a bill to abolish capital puni-
shment n Tennessee, "is just what he
makes himself. I would very probab-
ly still be piling barrel stares if I
hadn‘t decided to get out of the rut I
was in and start out for myself.
“But like most young fellows work-
ing on a small salary l was decided-
ly short on capital, and capital, you
know. is quite necessary to start in
business. Then I remember an old
friend in Clinton, Ky., Judge Dick
Moss., and I saw visions of a $300
loan. But l did better that I expected,
I left Clinton with S600 in my pocket.
I started out brimming over with
eniliuslasin. I had it all figured out-
the store would pay at least $3000 a
year. But the first day`s sales brou-
ght lionie to the great truth that there
is quite a difference between money
on paper and money in the cash till.
I had figured on a $10 ilay's business
-it was minus that b_v $9.92. But tiiat
8 cents was cash that meant much.
"The merchant who buys for cash
and sells for cash turns over his mon-
ey several times while competitors
are waiting for theirs to come in.
Turning over my money in this way
l figured that I could sell for a small-
er profit, thus doing both myself and
my customer a good iiirii. I adopted
the policy of selling iioihing under 12
per cent profit, or nothing over 15 per
cent profit.
"These policies were only incident-
al. lf I had not discovered newspap-
er advertising. l would still bo strug-
gling for a living in that first store
instead of having 43.
“lt came about in this way. A few
months after I opened my cash gro-
cery in Columbus, Ky.. Charles N.
Walker. who used to edit the paper
there. showed me it would be to my
advantage to take a lialf page ati
every week, changing the ad every
issue. Common sense told me that
there was no use running a business
that would save peoplc money unless
I told them so, so l signed it six
months' contract. It pullcd- so well,
in fact that I used to buy 200 extra
copies and mail them out over Carlis-
le county to see if I coundn't get the
farmers to come to Columbus to
trade. Pretty soon I became the big-
gest advertiser that \Valker had.

I began to use pages, and business
picked up accordingly. Seeing tho
success possible in a cash business
pushed by good advertising I sold out

- “Just before starting for Memphis
an uncle of mine called me out for a
private talk. ‘Dukc," he said, ‘you're
not going to Memphis, sure enough.
are you?’
"'That is what I am going to do,
Ilncle Em`, I replied. 'I am going
down there, and am going into the
grocery business right away.‘
"He shook his head sorrowfully and
said: ‘Dukt-, those newspapers will
get all the money you've got. Charlie
Walker has been making more out of
your business than you have.'
"Well, the newspapers have gotten
a lot out of me, but my greatest rc-
tlret is that I didn’t let them have
more-."` ,
“Then you believe in advertising?"
Mr. Bowers was asked.
“I'm not merely a believer in ad-
vertising," was his prompt rejoinder,
"l'ni almost a fanatic on the subject.
I firmly believe if l had only spent
half as much for advertising as I have
spent I \voiildii't bc worth halt' as much

Naturally such a strong statement.
even from a man who has made i-i
fortune and whose page ads have ap-
peared rcgularly for the last twclvc
yoars, would startle some grocers
who think of a six-inch column ad as
being big. But it must be remember-
ed that Bowers believed in doing
things in an unusual way. Perhaps
tiiat is why lic was an unusual succ-

He is a great believer in impressing
it point upon the newspaper readers
in a pcrtincnt way. Here is an illust-
ration. lt was rumored by conipeti-
tors that the reason Bowers made

on measure.

eompetitorswould say. "ifll only gave
you 14 ounces to the pound." _

_unfair attack Bowers was tickled to
death. Being as good an advertising
man as he was a merchant he quickly
made advertising capital out of it. Ho
ran double page spreads in all the
papers in Memphis announcing that
he would sell peck measures and
scales at cost, so that his customers
would know they were Setting full
value for their m-onoy.

Remarkable.
The following from the New York
World, which has never been prone
'to say complimentary things about
British royalty, is as significant as it
is interesting:
While the British statesman are
making shreds and tatters of each
other's reputation in their public
quarrels, King George goes quietly on
his way attending to the duties of his
position. "playing the game" as far
as he himself is concerned with great
discretion and wisdom. His popu-
larity with his subjects has wonder-
fully increased accordlngly, which is
all the more remarkable because it
was only in March, 1914, that the
House of Commons witnessed an out-
burst against the sovereign, led by
the radical and labor memberla, which
had not been known there for nearly
a century. It was at the time of the
Ulster crisis.
When the war began he kept him-
self in the background except for or-
namental occasions, not having the
constitutional privilege of his cousin,
William II., of being the leader of the
army in any sense of the word. It
was only after much tactful persua-
sion that he obtained permission from
Lord Kitchener for the Prince of
Wales to remain at the front per-
manently. Tho king himself has been
with tho troops for only a short visit
of a few days last fall. He has re-
cently returned from a visit to Ad-
miral Jellicoe and the navy.
But not a day passes that he is
not engaged upon his humane labors
for the -soldiers, and these are, after
all. of no mean imporince in arous-
ing loyalty, patriotism and enthusi-
asm for the war., The people have
Ialso become acquainted with their
king through his daily intercourse in
a way which before the war would
have seemed hardly feasible, since it
has meant the removal of many arti-
ficial barriers. But King George’s
kindly. simple nature has stood the
test and the warm sympathy lic has
shown for the soldiers has become an
asset for the Government.
The royal estate in Scotland at
Balmoral has been in use as a con-
valc-scont home for wounded officers
for many months, while Windsor
(‘astIc and Buckingham Palace are
the center of numerous arrangements,
charitable in their nature. for the bc-
nefit of the soldiers. Beginning early
in June. the king. assisted by the
queen, began entertaining daily par-
ties of convalescent soldiers at lea at
Buckingham Palace, twenty mon bc-
iug invited for each occasion, many of
thcni being allowed to bring along
their nurses or their near relatives.
Tea is laid out in the gardens with
as much careful thought on the part
of His Majesty as if he were giving a
garden party to the court, and the
men rdmain throughoiit thc whole
afternoon enjoying the .sunshine and
fresh air and talking to the king. For
several weeks this hospitality has
been supplemented by drives in the
royal motors and carriages, as King
George has ordered that the royal
mewrbe devoted to this purpose as
much as possible. Parties are made.

whose business it is to follow the
king's example, have been inviting thc
soldiers .to their country places for
convalesccnce whore hospital treat-
ment was not necessary.
One of the most important chari-
table projects iii which the king is in-
terested is out at Roehanipton, where
a large residence, Roehampton House,
has been fitted up for the soldiers and
sailors who have lost limbs in the
war. The old custom was to dis-
charge auch men from the liospltal
after the amputation and scnd the
artificial limb after them. Of course.
not being properly fitted, they were
generally mistlts and frequently were
useless. Early in the war an appeal
was made for a different method in
treating those unfortunate men. and
the result is now seen at Roehampton
Ilouse, whore the llmhloss sailors and
soldiers are sent to be fitted by the
most export makers of artificial limbs.
Fifty thousand dollars was granted
from the Prince oi’ Wales Fund. the
War Office, the Red Cross and other
orlraiilzations made donations and
King George and Queen Mary gave
generously from their private purses.
They make frequent visits to the men
in the rounds which they take among
the hospitals almost every day.
PATRIOTISM.
