Snoop Dogg presents Tha Eastsidaz (8) TVT/Universal/ DoggHouse Snoop’s beena very busy dogg of late with lots of material coming out but fans won’t complain as he’s returned to his LBC style. Nowhe’s got Tha Eastsidaz which is atrio of rappers from the Eastside of Long Beach California. Teaming up with Snoop are rappers Tray Deee and Goldie Loc who have appeared on previous Snoop tracks. As for the album, its banging. Vintage Snoop rhymes, which work well with the flow of Loc and Deee, are laced over West Coast beats and guested by Xzibit, Kurupt, Warren G and Jayo Felony as well as others. MacDonald We Are The Streets (7) Lox RuffRyders/Interscope More hardcore and improved since their release from the fallen Bad Boy records is the Lox release We Are The Streets. They come through with some nice joints but the album suffers a little from annoying and pointless skits and subjects that get tired after awhile. MacDonald Methods of Mayhem (1) Methods of Mayhem The Last Tour on Earth Marilyn Manson(1) Sea The problem with a student paper is that you receive dozens of free CDs so people clamor around after them in search of the freebie, like third problem is that some people feel obligated to publish reviews for many of the CDs we receive. These reviews serve as advertisements for the record label that send them, good review or bad, and while this may seem distasteful, free ads for large fat pocket labels, sometimes you have no choice, its publish reviews ornothing. Well this one is bad man, real bad. In fact, The Methods of Mayhem and the live Marilyn Manson might as well be the same record. It sounds like the low hum ofa transformer box with an innocuous guitar riff (or five) thrown over top The lyrics (from MOM: “Get naked/c’mon baby make it hot’”’) are as illiterate as they are insignificant. In short, I would sooner have my head carved out like a honeydew melon than I would listen to either of these heaping piles of shit again-they are too bad, even, to feed to the dogs. Bruyneel A Night To Remember (7) Rick Nelson True North/Universal Recorded in 1985 —not long before this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member was killed ina plane crash —this CD features many of Nelson’s greatest hits, EDITORIAL 13 continued from page 3 caught mine as he said “engage” and I have rarely felt so moved in my life. An educator can only teach something the student wants to learn. But it must be harder to teach someone like me who is convinced he knows. Mencher has students who have Pulitzer Prizes on their walls so Iam sure I was a cheese sandwich to him, but man, to me, that meeting changed the way I view publishing altogether. It is not about me, or Sarah, or Richard, or Ryan or Marc or Stephan or Brian or Jeff or James or anyone who works here. It is about you the reader. I am sorry it took this long to figure out. But man, what an important lesson. Ask yourself some questions he told me: Do you always need to challenge the reader? Do you always need to have the last word? Do you need to have total control over content, design, and voice? Well, I thought I did, but you know, I was wrong. Is anybody out there? Is anyone reading this? Does it matter if you are not?
