A Few Words About Sheep. There is no domestic animal more liable to disease than sheep; and yet, with proper care, there is none more easily kept ina healthy state. Sheep are tender, delicate animals, but nature has ssovidd them with shields against many dangers. If they have shelter it time of storms, and especially rain an a snow etorms, and have suffieient clean water, there is little to be feared trom | disease, Sheep need fre yuent chang res ot pas- ture, in the pas sture season, and the same rule ap pies in referance to dry| food. Itisarule applying to all ani mate nature that the more refined the organization, the greater need ot variety in sustenance, We do not mean the variety in classes or kinds of food, | but rather variety in that general sense which ineludes in means of sustenance all proper elements in healthy growth —care and treatment, as well as food. | We believe every farmer ought to! have some sheep, more or less, 2s his | means and conveniences will justly. But unless he ean give them good) attention, and care for them well, he is better without them. Oats, rye an l corn ought to be set apart for sheep in| the winter, and alittle of oneor all of them fed along through the fall ; racks and troughs shoul 1 be prepared and kept clean. An excellent arr angment for feeding is made as follows: ‘Tak a twe ineh plank a foot wide and be sar} the edges; then, on each edge put ai feur inch piece even with the e dge « | the narrow side of the plank. This| makes a trough fiat and a foot wide. Then, on a line three inches from each | outer edge of the trough bore arow of | inch holes three inches apart. Bore| them at. an angle to corres poed with the bevel on the edge of the plank. In| these holes put sticks, shaved saw ed or turned, twenty-four to twenty-eight) inches long, and put their upper ends | - ' through similar holes in a three or four nx inch piece, and have these top pieces | joined at the ends and at proper dis— tanees between to give strength. This| makes a rack and trough combined | Which may be kept in “position by) being fastened on benches or logs’ or it| may have its own feet. Bran, shorts, and any kind of ground feed and sait, or whole grain, may be conveniently fed in sucha trough, and hay or fodder} is wellsecured inthe rack. O/ course | the hay must all be cleaned out before | putting the ground feed or grain in the | trough. Sheep will feed nicely on both sides of such a rack and stand in | the most enconomical and healthy posi- | tion. —Rural Reeord. Cattle Kings in Colorado — So rapid has been the growth of the} cattle trade, that the cattle of Colorado are now estimated to number 1,000,000 head, with a value of 20,000,000, dols. or £4,000,000. The largest owners are the Prairie Caitle Company, in the Southern part of the State, who pos- sesses 60,000 head, one-half of which are American and fine bred animals, which-have cost noless than 30 dols. per head. Bat three-quarters of a million of the cattle of Colorado are the property of men styled ‘‘cattle kings,” whese ownorship ranges respectvely from 15,600 to 40,000 head. A Denver journal states that many of the animals owned by farmers are worth from £20 to £100 each; these are the Jerseys, the Devons, the Shorthorns, the Holsteins, and the white-faced Herefords. Up-| wards oftwo millions of money is} invested in Colorado in the these animals ef superior blood. A quarter of a million of ,cattle are grazed in Pubelo, Bent, Huerfano, and Las Ani- mas countries in the south, while an- other half million are east of Denever, and between Kit Carson and _ the borders of Kansas and the Platte River atthe north, the remaing quarter of a million being found jn the great parks iu the San Luis Valley, on the Dolores over beyond the Continental divide on the Gunnison, the Grand, and the Blue, i and with the farmers scattered ever the entire State. During the year 1882) the increase to the cattle through the whole State has been 25 per cent. | greater than io any previous year, and the valuation has almost doubled. | This was owing to the mild winter of | 1881, and the abundant grass:of last) summer. The great rise in the valua-| tion was due to the scarcity of perins the East and in Europe, and the grow-| ing interest of English and Scoteh’ eap-| ital in the great grazing business in the interior of. America. No less than | £3,000,000 sterling of English and | Seotch capital has been paid for cattle | in Colorado since the year 1872, and | another million has been paid for | water privileges, grazing lands Ke, In| 1882 there were shipped abroad from | Colorado 60,000 head of beef, whieh netted 2,000,000 dols. The tr ade has nearly all sprungup since the year 1864, and in six years from that date the number of cattle in the State rose | to 750,000 head. Bat many of these were young -buffaloes. Since the introduction of railways they have been supplanted by beautiful Texas, Durham, and Hereford animals, and the animal that was worth £4 only in 1870 is now worth £8 or £10.
