anI sun October 14, 1982‘ - JOCK ByMICKEY PLACE Watching a World Series on T.V. and, at the same time attempting to keep track on thebradio, of the-'N.B. election as well as three federal by- elections is certainly 3 not the proper atmos- phere for writing a but we'll have to give it a try. The Sun Editor intimidates us & is very put out if this is not filed by . 9:00 P._M. on'I‘uesdays. To start first with the bad news. . .our Field Hockey team dropped a pair to classy U.N.B. by 9-0 and 4-0 scores. For those of us whose pro- vincial ego might be hurt by this we'll ob- serve no less than five of the visitors were frcm P.E.I. . . . includ— ing All-Canadian~ scoring star Donna Phil- lips! We are no»; left with a slight chance to make the playoffs but must win all three re- mainjnggames. ‘S.M.U., & Mt. A. here & librarial in St. Hohn's. In Soccer we should be plunmeted ' from limbo into a high national rant-ingfas we took three of four pos- sible points from U.N.B. andcnepointuponMount, Allison. The two top teams in the section make the playoffs. We have three games retaining M Mount A. away on Sunday . & two here against Meme orial the next weekend. A.U.A.A. finals will be playedonthe 30 & 310ct. &’ we plan to be there. Our goalkeeper, Jean Francois Painchaud has been scored upon only once in ourlast six A our 2-1 win at I U.N.B. as a BAD game for him. One of the hockey players expressed the opinion that we may ~ have been a little enthus- iastic in our praise of the but we told him we gave then something to live up to. In the lobster Pot Tournament played in Halifax last weekend the U. de Monoton Blue Eagles beat Dal- housie 6-4 in the final game while Saint Mary's topped U.N.B. 5-1 in the consolation match. Our Halifax informant ad- vises us that Moncton sc scored FIVE power-play goals &, in the final seconds, one into the empty Dal. net. Seems advisable to have six men on the ice when playing them! Against a full team they went score less with the National Champion Mono— ton and always-strong Saint Mary's here this weekend we should have a pretty good idea by amday night as to how we will shape up this year against the others in the always strong league. ' A cheering crowd helps so be there}! Turning to Volleyball ( (at last) Coach Donna Sears estimates that our team has great potential this year. We are in a one league format so will be playing & rated among the best in the region. With a little luck. a lot of hard work, total team effort & concentra- 'tion UPEI should finish among the top four at the end of the season. Re- . turnees include Joanne Dthinnon, an excellent player with an abundance of technical skill, who is a namre & excellent TALK leader. Debbie Gunn is back for a second year & she will be playing but one position this vear Her strengths are in the areas of serving & backcourt defense. New players to the team, but second year stu— dents at UPEI include Debbie McAloney who moves over from basket— ball, Andrea Thompson after a two year layoff from the sport and Colleen Archibald who also dropped out for a couple ofmyears. Newccmers include Brenda Pridham form Westisle (female athlete of the year) Chris MacLaughlan ' form- C'tbwn Rural as well as four form last year's strong Colonel Gray team, Janice Scott, Holly McLean, Nadine Sutcliffe and Wendy Weeks. Scott,Maclean, Sutcliffe and the two Debbies are ‘all members Of the Canada Games Team. The UPEI team Will be travelling to various junior and senior high ..-'. schools the province giving player's clinics Team. This is a young .- team with many freshmen playing auqurs will playing and augurs well for UPEI for several years. They open with two games atUNB on‘12 & 13 Nov, and will be at hone against Acadia' 20;,Nov. And to the World's Series and the elections...we like the Cards in Six...so it will probably be Milwaukee in four!“ .
