Marizio de Buonfanti, he perpetrated a rem rkable ge ographical hoax, whieh imposed fora while oa two learned societies and a few geographi- ypers Of Europe, and secured one ot cai pewsp i him work under the International Afri- can Association. He suddenly appeared in Brussels tant fall, and presented himself as aj recent arrival from the west coast of | Africa, after wandering for 22 years} in the Sahara lesert, in the western . Soudan, and along the Niger river, dur- | in which time he had only one white man.,an American named Dr. Van secn Flint, who was the companion of his travels. He tolda long and circum- stantial story, giving a complete history of his wanderings from the time he left Tripoli on April 1, 1861, until he arrived at La ros, on the west coast, in March, 1883. He had been a careful student of Barth, Mungo Park and all other authorities on the western Soudan. He made no blunders evidently in his references to partially known countries. His story, however, was chiefly devoted to large districts of whieh little or nothing was known, io- cluding the Niger river between Tim- buctoo and Say, and the wholly unex- plored kingdoms of Tombo, Mossi and Bussango. He gave a great deal of' in- formation about these unknown lands. A long account of his interesting and remarkable adventures was published in the Bulletin of the Belgian Geogre- phical Society and copied into a large part of the European press. A parti- cular graphic part of his narrative re- lates to the journey of his caravan io tive large boats from Say to Timbuctoo, to the refusal of the dignitaries of that city to receive him until they convinced themselves that he was neither French nor English, to their lavish hospitality when they found he belonged to neither of those hated nations, and to his suffer- iags in Mossi, where he was robbed of ail he had. The Marquis had not been ia Brussels a week before be secured employment with the Lnternational Association, to wom he represented that his long ex- pp ence in Africa would make his ser- peculiarly valuable on the Congo. rted for Africa to take charge of the Congo districts He had hardly had time to reach that river last spring when all the geogra- phical papers began to denounce him afraud, It has been ascertained that the European and American consuls who lived at Tripoli in 1861 had never heard the name of Buenfanti or Van Flint. Dr. G. Krause wrote from Logos that no resident of that place had ever seen them. The Italian Geographical Society issued a bulletin denouncing the Marquis as animposter. The Ambas- 1 from Timbuctoo to France, who rrived in Paris last spring, was inter- viewed by Gen. Faidherbe with regard to Buontanti’s alleged visit to the Afri- city. The interviewer filled a column of La Gazetie Greographique and in it the envoy said that Buonfanti’s account of his adventures in Timbuactoo was supretaly ridicu!ous, and that no such person had ever been there. It is understood that the Inter- rational Association had decided that it had no further use for the talents of the Marchese Maurizio de Buonfanti, and had issued orders for his recall some time before the news was received that be had fallen a victim to African fever. He at least achieved the noto- riety of foisting himself for a time upon the attention of geographers with one of the most ingenious fictions ever iavented by irresponsible travellers, In New York city, where he was known as Mauris, he hada_ brief but brilliant career. By copying verbatim someof the best articles printed in Kurope, he made something of a liter- ary reputation for himself; but even- tually he ran afoul of the Sun’s office cat, and thereafter wrote no more for the New York press. He then forged the sigaatures of some of New York’s respectable citizens, obtained money in Baltimore and Boston under various Soon afterwards he st: FuU¢ can fulee pretences, and fled to France to avoid arrest.—New York Sun. He has been a great sufferer from Scrof- ula, and the inclosed letter will tell you whas a marvelous effect Ayers Sarsaparilla has had in his case. I think his blood must have contained the tumor for at least ten years; but it did not show, except in the form of ascrofulous sore on the wrist, until about five years ago. From @ few spots which ap peared at that time, it gradually spread so as to cover his entire body. I assure you he was terribly afficted, and an object of pity, when he began nsivg your medicine, Now, there are few men of his age who enjoy as good health as be has. I could easily name fifty persons who would testify to the facts in his case. Yours truly, W. M. PHILLIPS.” “Tt is boths FROM THE FATHER: pleasure and a duty for me to state to you the benefitI - have derived from the use of Ayer'’s Sarsaparilla. Six months ago 1 was completely covered with @ terrible humor and scrofulous sores. The humor caused an incessant and intolerable itching, and the skin cracked #0 as to canse the blood to flow in many places whenever I moved. My sufferings wexe great, and my life a burden. 1 commenced the use of the SARSAPARILLA in April last, and have used it regulariy since that time. My condition began to improve at once. The sores have a)] healed, and I feel perfectly well in every respect — being now able to do a good day’s work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire what has wrought such a cure in my ease, and I tell them, as I have here tried to tell you, AYER’S SARSAPARILLA, Glover, Vt., Oot. 21, 1382. Yours gratefully, e.
