Lovely ferns are in the wood and in many varieties, also they are seen in sortie gardens where the gardener has taken a. short time to gather them in the shady wees and plant them for per- anent beauty at little cost. A great deal of pleasure can be had in the gathering. Trilliums or wake-robin, as B. Hurst describes them in the booklet ”Flowerlng Plants and Ferns of Prince Ed- ward Island,” are now blooming and they make such lovely bou- quets for little children with the long stemmed deep mauve violets. A very pleasant morning was spent at "The Cotton Memorial Nursery" this week and the mo- ment you drive by the large sign you notice the luxuriant growth of all the shrubs and trees. It is hard to believe that the lovely garden has been made in three years and has been instrumental in making hundreds of gardens on this Island by the distribution of healthy shrubs and plants. It is also an experimental nur- sery to determine the hardiness of tender shrubs and trees for our climate, and many of these have proved to be suitable for the Is- land gardens. Visitors to Washington In April are always enthusiastic about the great cher- ry blossom display around the basin and in the area adjoining the Jefferson Memorial. In fact, this great outburst of spring bloom has come to be synonymous with spring activities in the capital. Garden enthusiasts who have seen these trees are always anxious to plant them, and when these trees are placed in an appropriate setting. they are particularly no- table, both in flower and in foliage. Then, too, the rough bark and branches of the Japanese cher- ries and the graceful pendulous habit of the weeping forms make them particularly desirable where picturesque effects are needed. The area beneath them can be planted with crocuses, miniature tulips and other spring-flowering bulbs, ground covers, and the effect will be enchanting. I saw all these lovely bulbs at the Nursery that morning and Muscari with the beautiful blue spikes, long-lasting and looking so well with the water lily tulip and all the early varieties.
