A BICYCLE THAT IS EITHERA SINGLE OR TANDEM, A Machine That Can Add—New Electric Letters for Advertising Purposes—Other Scientific News, The accompanying cut shows an Ruz- lish make of interchangeable tandem bicycle recently patenied, It is apph- enable to any rear-driving safety, and can ve changed from a single toa double mount in 15 minutes. To fit it, take the back wheel out o? tafety. Then connect our attachment to satety by fixing B into the fork ends of \ INTERCHANGEABLE TANDEM, safety. D is an adjustable stay, with a right and left-handed thread, which forms chain adjustment for front chain, and strengthens front machine by fixing F to down tube ; then put wheel into A. A NEW CHAINLESS SAFETY. In the bicycle shown in the follov ing cut, instead of the usual chain and sprocket, two bevel gears, adjusted on ball bearings, whose teeth are accurately cut by a special process, are incased in peat dust—proof aluminium boxes in the center of the crank shaft bracket. To one of the gears is attached a shaft that evan through the rear fork of the rame to the rear wheel, where it en- gages the teeth of two more gears, also incased in dust-proof boxes. It is re- CHAIMLESS SAFETY. marked that the gears are accurately adjusted, run in oil, and are entirely concealed from view. The manufac- turers claim for the wearing qualities of the gears that they will not break and that they will outwear the rest of the machine; also that there is no possibility of their getting cut of alignment under the same proper usage as the ordinary chain and sprocket wheel receives. It is said the wheel runs as easily as any in the market, climbs hills with one-third less labor and saves the rider the trouble and expense incident to loose and gritty chains, IT BEATS THE BOOKKEEPER. A Little Machine That Does His Work in Half the Time, The accompanying picture shows the appliance, which will add up mechanical- ly a column of figures in something be- tween a half anda quarter of the time occupied by an expert bookkeeper. As shown by illustration, the centigraph has five keys, something like those of a typewriter, and numbered one to five. The other numerals are obtained by simultaneous pressures of No. 5 with keys 1,2, 8 and 4, and all that the operator has to do to add up a lengthy column of figures is to read off the units one by one from the column and press down the corresponding key or combination of keys. At the conslusion the sum of these various units will be indicated, the hundreds by the pointed arrow, and the tens and units in the slot on the circular plate. For instance, the sum shown in the drawing is three on the hundred pointer, and 82 in the slot, i. e., 332, The capacity of the indi- cator is 500, a sum quite sufficient to ex- press the addition of units in the longest column ever made in a business ledger. Having recorded the unit—in the case shown, 2—the machine is turned back- THE MACHINE ADDER, wards to zero, and then used to carry forward 33 to the next column—the tens—which may be added up in pre- cisely the same way. The mechanism is sufficiently explained »y the illustra- tion, and is, comparatively speaking, quite simple. Electric Letter for Advertising. It has been estimeic that tie state of Iilinois loses every ye $100,000,000 because of bad roads, Now lam going to urge a plan which I tc lieve to be the most burdensome and t!: most effectual and equitable for prov: ing good roads, Let each state establis a graduated succession tax, that is, . taxon property passing by successi: by inheritance or by legacy. The succession tax will not fall on t wor, Those whose estates amount 10,000 can well afford to give $100 1 tbe state in return for all the proteciio of its laws, which has enabled wealih i be accumulated and enjoyed. Japanese Waltzing Mices, Lately the employes at the Philadel- phia zoological garden have been amused by the anticsof some queer little animals which are not on public exhibition. The newcomers are white and black Japanese waltzing mice, seven in number, When let out of their cages they wink at each other and step gracefully forward with a movement which some of the behold- ers declare is 2 bow.
