Black Watch, writes:-We have had a
fiendish week of fighting around A--
\Ve had to force our way step by step
and l am only telling the honest truth
when I say that every inch we march-
ed was colored red with the blood of
.our own men and the Germans. lt
was like passing through ai grave yard
where an earthquake had turned up
all the corpses and left them lyiilg
above the ground. As we picked our
way through the long lane of dead
hat now seemed tollnvc no turning.

for water or some assistance ln doing
up their bandages. lt was pitiful, and
we were so helpless.
We were behind the Royal irish
Fusiliers, who were clearing the ene-
my out, alld it stirrcd us greatly to
watch the way they tackled the enemy.
The work they had was terrible, and
the Germans suffered awfully all the
time. We saw them lighting their way
:lp one long. winding road that seemed
as long as the road to Tipperary. At
every turn and behind every tree lin-
ing the roads the Germans were post-
ed. and the Royal Irish had to rush
them out. It was slow work, but they
never seemed to tire. and after a day
of the hardest fighting l have ever
seen they cleared the Germans out of
the last position, and then the town
was carried with a general rush, the
Royal irish being the first to enter.
Probably some other regiment could
ave got in easier, but because ofthe
hard time they had had the Royal lrisll
I-‘usiliers were given the honor of en-
tering in and raising the British flag
\Ve are now working in n different
part of the country and are making
good progress. Everywllerc we hear
that the Germans are weiiryill|.: of the
struggle, and some ot’ these days they
are bound to collupsc. They appear
