City. left. last night on a trip to Europe Egypt and the Holy on Hell is a fitting second to that which was published lsstBat.urday,| and which has caused wide-spreadf comment. The sermon is a fearless' handling of the subject which is treated according to modern ideas' and should receive careful attention! from Guardian readers. Shortly after five o’clock yester- day as Mayor Prowse was emerging! from the City Hall, he was grected| bya citizen who exclaimed; “Glad to congratulate you on your election, although I voted dead against you."l The gravity of this was completely upset by another citizen '-v`no cnmc` up and __ said "Glad to congratulate you, Mayor, and I voted -lead for you.” A fire which must have been very _aggravating to the officials of th Telephone Company, and which cer- tainly has caused alot of incon- venience to telephone-users occured yesterday afternoon. For many weeks past the Telephone Company has been engaged putting ln nc', cables to hold their various wires throughout the city. 'The substitu- tion of these cables for the old- tlme system ol separate lines re- sulted in a much improved system? of communciation and eliminates thc‘ buzz which is always buzzing when it gets a chance. It seems that the Company had almost lnccompllshed the task of getting nil their cables completed and were about finishing the splicing ofthe last wires. This splicing is the most particular part. of the job and takes a lot of time* and care. Readers may have noticed the little hut erected on ladders in _which the workmen have been work- ing on the lines high above the street of late. In this nut t;'!':c wires are spliced and proper connections made. Two of the telephone me were in this structure yesterday afternoon, on the street just outside the Telephone exchnnge. They were splicing the Inst wires on their long job, and in about fifteen minutes would have ended their task, and about 1350 wires would have been attended to. But unfortunately, just at this time, a portable gaso- line furnace, used in the work of splicing, and for melting paraflne wax, s. lot of which is used explod- ed and set fire to the hut. The _structure was thoroughly soaked with wax and was highly lnflammnble and immediately becamsa mass of flames. The two men working inside had narrow escapes. Wm. Kelly splicer, got out at one end of thc of the hut. and descended to the ground by means of is spiked tele- phone pole near by. but not before hu'was very seriously burned about* the hands. His assistant, James' -‘Brown started for the ground by, means of the ladder which by this time was on fire. In his descent his face was burned, snd_ while he was' about twenty-five feet from the' ground the ladder broke and he felll lasted, burned very fiercely and th | cables inside were entirely deetrnyerri 350 Wires in one cable being comple 1 tely burned out and nearly 400 in' another, As c result of this the' majority of the City telephones _are‘ D.
