Mariel-linkage- M-nbel How Would He Do It? Prime Minister Diefenbaker's warning to Canadian industry against taking advantage of dollar devalution through increased prices to consumen raises an interesting question: How does he propose to stop it? According to Walter Gor- don, Libenl campaign chairman. the Government would have to in. troduce price controls if it really plans to take such action. These. he maintains. couldn't possiny work without wage and profit controls as well. He did not think it likely that Canadians would accept this form 0! regimentation in peacetime. b not against legitimate increases but against attempts to exploit the devaluation issue. And it is inter- asting in this connection to note that Mr. Tommy Douglas. the NDP leader who has been denouncing de- valution In even louder terms than the Liberals. says the current round of price increases “could not pns. sihly be due entirely to devaluation on the dollar." The more liker cu]. prit, in his view. was private indus- try's desire to “get on the band- wagon“ to raise prices. It is being noted that Mr. Dief- enbaker’s threat. though naming no specific industries. was parallel to the attack 1:." President Kennedy on US. steelmakers after they rais- sd their prices urlier this year. Perhaps the Prime Minister had this example in mind. The steelmakcrs. it will be recalled. backed down un. der the Kennedy pressure. Actually. as the Prime Minister noted. the cost of living in Canada has shown a decrease in the April- May period this year. Even since July 1961. when the Government cleared sway the tight money situ- ation, it has gone up only 1 per cent. Perhaps the index is due (or a rise now. whether or not it coincides with the Prime Minister's election Tut, Tut, Mr. Pearson! We hazard the statement that than is no more sincere patriot in the country then Liberal l {I 5! i! ? i u st Imetals fish-st. huh. i malt politicians for evidence of thh fact. Mr. James A. Robl'tl. Duality lb- isur of Ma and Columns. is a top-ranking civil servant. He has nothing to do with partisan political but in a statement before the Can- adian Manufacture-s minim: this week he pointed out that our exports. since last year, have been steadily climbing. They reached an all<tlme record a! $5.76 billion in 1961. producing a surplus in mer- chandise trade of $125 million—the first such surplus since 1952. Last year. however. there was still a large deficit with the United States. Evidence that this imbalance is being corrected was given in Mr. Roberts' figures for the {Int two months of this year, which showed exports to the us. to have increas- ed 28.8 per cent above 1961 levels, as against an increase at 18.4 per cent in imports. This export ex- pansion, affecting manufacturinl. trade and service industries, was reflected in higher employment. which was up 8.4 in February as compared to the same month of 1961. “Pegging of the Canadian dollar at a lower level.” said Mr Roberta. "should further stimulate emt activity. It should also hold impwta to a moderate rats of expansion.” Both these trends he regarded as desirable: and so, we venture to say. do most Canadians. At any rate. there is no room for "blue ruin" ' tlk. .\ . The threatened action. of course.‘ “ “d 7' Pearson Would da well to remember this in future. Effortless Mowing? British manufacturers h a v e come up with what they claim is the best answer yet to a lazy man’s dream. It's a cheap and simple de- vice called a Mowmasler. and it is described as "a rectangular box- shaped affair which you put at the I end of the lawn.” You've guessed it? It's an auto- matic lawnmower. and the wonder is that somebody didn't get the idm long ago. You just attach an ordin- ary motor mower to a cord which is fixed to a rod sticking out of the anmaster. Then you start the mower and set it all. It proceeds on a circular path round the Mow- ‘ master. the diameter of the circle naturally depending on the lenlzth of cord used. But immediately one inn is completed. the Mowmaster. controlled by a lever mechanism. is automatically pulled forward the width of the cut. it's like moving a waiter sprinkler a little further along. So it goes on for lap after lap until it reaches the end of the lawn. By that time it has cut a rectangular piece of lswn and only the rounded edges at each cor- ner need to be finished off by hand. Ah. there's the ruhi One still has to get up and finish it off. Al- ways a chore to be done by hand. Hnw can one dose off comfortably in a hammock. on the beak pol-eh or under a shady tree.
