Now his policy will be magnanimous. It has been said that the pride of success would make him insufferable to the Powers. Ido not be- lieve it. Their meekness and loag suffer- ing are inexhaustible, and he is too weary to trespass upon them when there is noth- ing to gain. He has already intimated his desire to end the war. Having vindicated lis honor, and destroved the prestige of Greece, he says he is distressed by the waste of life and property, and asks, why not restore the status quo ante bellum? He says he knows this will be the result ef the war, however long it may last. So he ia ready for peace at once. Only one contingency may brivg the Sultan in con- flict with Europe. He may find the military party too strong. The party is opposed to giviug back Thessaly to Greece. It 1s believed here even by some of those in diplomatic circies that if the Sultan insists upon holding Thessaly, no Kuropean Power will go to war to turn him out by force, especially if there should be a revolution in Greece.
