They have been in the workhouse from three to twenty five years. Tak Farat Day.—It was the 18th that proved to be the fatal day—for the Grits. _ THEY are about to start a Hosiery and Underwear factory in St. John. Messrs. Bacnat ann McG EE. last week exported seventeen -fine horses to New Bedford, Mass. P. H. Coxcey, of Portland, defeated Mc- Kay in a single scdll contest at Halifax, on Friday evening last. Rav. Mr, Taompson, of Washington Terri- tory, ison a visit to his parents and friends here, He preached in St. James Church yes- terday evening. Tur 19th has come and gone—and we still live. There was a heavy rainstorm, and, considering the phazes of the moon, an ex- traordinary tide. Only this ! A meetine of ‘‘ Prince Edward Council’ Reyal Arcanum, will be held to-morrow (Tuesday) evening, 21st inst., at half-past 8 o'clock, and don’t you ferget it. Nova Scorra Conrgerenca.—Rev. John Lathern has been appointed President of the Nova Seotia Methodist Conference. At the opening, Rev. R. Brecken was allowed leave ot absence to visit England. Sir Jomw Macpona.p still remains weak, but is able to take short walks. Dr. Clarke's diagnosis of his trouble is in direct variance with Sir John’s Canadian pkysicians, and he therefore desires to be near his patient until he understands his constitution and until his health improves. Work at the new breakwater at Poiat Du} Chene commenced to-day. It wiil extend 600 | feet in an easterly direction from the present | one towards the shore. Only four or five mex | are emplyed at prescat, but when active oper-— ations begin a great number will be required. Some are now at work putting up a black- sith thep and setting up a forge ; alse build- ing a scew for carrying ballast, of which there are 3,000 yards lying on the flats ready for use. We regret to learn that the residence of Mr. J. G. Macleod, of Bothwell, together with his store, granary, warehouse and stable, was, on the night of the 16th inst, entirely destroyed by fire. The time of the fire was a little past midnight, and Mr. Macleed and family barely escaped with their lives. ‘The werk was that of an incendiary. Strong sus- picion rests on a fiend in human shape who his threats were too lightly heeded by the victim. Mr. Macleod has the entire sym- pathy ef the whole community, as he is de- servedy held in high esteem by all who know him. His loss will be great, as there was no insurance. Mr. Macleod is brother of Mr. M. G. Macleod, of the firm of J. D. Macleed & Ce., of this city. Tue Sun contains a favorable criticism of some pictures Mr. Miles, an artist in St. John, has prepared far the Halifax Exhibition, and says :-— ‘“There is no representative of the Maritime Provinces in the Council of tho Academy. ‘This is not just the thing, and inevitably gives rise to suspicions of unfair- ness to our artists. Mr. Miles should be raised from the rank of Associate, to that of Academician, and added to the Council. It is to be hoped that the powers which be will see the justice of this demand. The Sun is mistaken. Mr. R. Harris, an Academician and one of the hanging committee for the Exhibition, has his home in Charlottetown, P. E. I. We supposed that Academicians were selected because of their talent, as displayed in their works, and not because they belong to this or that section of Canada. We hope this supposition is correct. We also hope that Mr. Miles will honorably win the coveted honor, independently of puffs in the newspapers. ——-—- - Tux Tives.—At the quartering ef the moon, tides in this Province generally fall off from the fuller new of the moon. But last week, at the full of the moon, we had apring tide, and afterwards tides as high as spring tide, which continued up to Satur- day without showing the deeline of an inch. The same tides, we see by exchanges, were experienced throughout the, other Pro- vinces. Tux Quintette Club give one of their grand concerts in Georgetown to-morrow evening. They will be assisted by Mr. Hermans, Mr. Williams, the Charlettetown Jubilee 8 ingers and others, and the concert will be, witheut doubt, a grand success. Sep.—The anti-Water Werks audience which attended the City Council this fore- noon. A story is told ef a good Grit who left this city en Saturday morning to vote for the Grit candidate in Pictou; but forgetting hia side of politics om seeing the enthusiasm of Gev- ernment supporters in Pictoa, he went the Conservative ticket. ieee Ox hearing the result of the Nova Scotia Elections on Saturday evening, a good dis- ‘pley of fireworks was made before the CHEAP CASH STORE! —_——_:Oo——— HEARTZS OLD STAND, Opposite the Market. ———0:6 HE Subscriber would inform the purchasing public that he has opened in the above | well-known Store a large and varied assortment of Goods in the following lines : Hardware, Stoves, Groceries, Earthen, Glass and Wooder Ware, Dye Stuffs, &e., &c., Which he is prepared to sell to Cash Customers at a Swati ApvaNnce on Cost. ome Nails and Spikes, Iron and Steel, Paint (all colors); Boiled, Raw, Sweet, Lard, Machinery, Woel, Codfish and Kerosene Oils; Varnishes, Glass and Putty, Forks, Shovels, Spades, Hoes, Rakes, Rope, Hames, Whips, Chains, Hinges, Locks, Latches, Screws, Saws, Cutiery, Scales, Guns, Revolvers, Cartricges, Powder, Shot, Tea Trays, &c., &c.
