At this season when Christmas parcels are being sent ave-was, vitamin products have acnveved a prominent place in the packages because they are packed with en- ergy in a form convenient for ship- ping. Durlng the pest twenty years the public has become increaslllfiy conscious of nutritional require- menis, and medical research has established the absolute necessity of definite amounts of certain fond factors (vitamins) in the diet. While the average peacetime diet usually contains sufficient of these vitamins to ward, off actual defi- ciency diseases. all too Yfellllenlll’ it lacks adequate amounts to en- sure continued robust health. lt ls logical that adequate quantities of these important food factors 8N even essential under the added strain and stress of wartime condi- tions. The following is a quotation from an article which appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, October 5th. 1940: "England, locked in the struggle of total war and conscious of (he importance of maintaining at hlllh levels the strength and courage of its people, has fortified maraarme with vitamin A and restored cal- cium and thaiamin hYiIlTO-"lllifide (vitamin Bl) to flour. This action was taken on advice from the Mcdl- - cal Research council and with the recommendation of leaders in nu- trltlorlal research. Oftezl such parcels never reach their destination because of breakage or excessive damage. Thai in turn only means disappointment (or the men overseas. Postal authorities issue hints on packing from time to tithe. but poorly-packed articles will a-pfielll‘ and regularl come to grief. ‘min, car card boxes, such es shoe boxes, and thin, wooden boxes should not be used: nor docs a single sheet of ordinary brown paper afford sufficient protection. Cylindrical tin faxes are very liable to damage. The following foms of pickles are recommended: (l) strong, dou- ble-cardboard boxes. preferably those made of corrugated cardboard and having lids which completely enclose the sides of the bOX. 0X‘ l?) strmg wooden boxes. STRONG PACKING URGED Additional security may be ob- tained by applying an outer cover- ing of’ linen calico, or canvas. which should be securely sewn or cement- ed up. libodshsffs sud: as cakes, biscuits fruit, etc., which are liable to de- terioratlon should not be sent unles enclosed in airtight receptacles Further. honey, 1am, and similar semi-liquids must be packed in fins with lid; and Joints well soldered clown, and anything likely to be- come soft or sticky. such as choco- late or sweets. must be packed in ltaiéls with well-fitted’, screw-down . s. Addresses should be printed in bold letters in ink or indelible and Dr. J. C. Drummond were largely responsible. In consequence. ill effects from deficiency of cal- cium compounds and vitamin Bl will be minimized in Engkand not- withstanding lower rations. Vita- min A will accompany whatever edible fats remain available, and calcium and vitamin B1 will be supplied as long as any cereal foo ls left." Unfortunately, as a direct result of the war. natural vitamin sources are becoming restricted. For ex- ample, cod lvier oil, the best-known natural source of Vin-mans A and D. is scarce fishing trawlers have been largely commandeered for mine sweeping. Also rationing and rising prices of certain foods make it more difficult to oolaui adequate quantities of the various neccrsary vitamins. Vitamin C is one of those which have become mavens/ugly difficult to obtain in the diet. its most abundant sources are citrus fruits and tomatoes but Britain's imports of these have necessary diversion of shipping for other purposes. Vitamin C is not stored in the body to any great ex- tent and hence the individual re- quires a constant supply of it in the diet. Colds, influenza and other infections rapidly deplete the body of its meagre stores of this vitamin. Thus the only sure way to main- tain a sufficient quantity to meet emergencies is to provide a steady daily intake. For these reasons special prepar- ations as a dietary supplement con- taining standardized amounts of L been restricted by _ ll"? lmliortant Vitamin C as well as the other needed vitamins and minerals, will not only materially benefit those overseas but will be welcomed by them. Special overseas packs of vitamin products are now available and one manufacturer has made up a handy compact package, containing a. flftydny supply along with a personally signed gift card. There is no sales tax and no charge for pc~tage or packaging. The package ls available at a. substantially re- duced price. If, for any reason, the postal au- thorities find delivery of the par- cel impossible, the goods will be placed at the disposal of the near- est Canadian military hospital au- thorities.
