Jenkins is honorary president. The enterprise, initiative and the will to render a. community ser- vice have been responsible for the giving to Charlottetown and the beautiful Garden Province of Prince Edward Island an airport of which any people might well be proud. Tint story ought to be told. Out beside the North Arm of the York River, three miles north and slightly west of Charlottetown, one finds Upton Farm. ‘There are gent- 1y rolling fields bordered by spruc- vate race track-scene of many a day of thrilling sport-the whole centred around t1 Picturesque house. This is “Upton Park," the home of LieuL-Col. J. S. Jenkins. D. S. 0., And ft is to Co]. Jenkins and his cnthusrstic wife, that the thanks of the Island are due for one of the finest personal contributions to the advancement of aviation any- iwliere ‘in the Dominion. It is a llnrge part; of this beautiful farm that has been utilized for “Upton Airport." What brought about this develop- meat? By ordinary mode of travel, it re- qu res seven hours to reach, say. Monctolt- from Charlottetown, that to cape Tormentlne, and rail again to Moncton. Accustomrd, but not on the occasio ‘of an extended trip by air through the Southern States ‘early last year. that Dr. Jenkins de- cided it was high time that some- thing bc done to bring about e. faster mode of transportation be- tween his island and the rest of the country. ‘Thanks to the determination with which Col. Jenkins pursued the l idea, one may now comfortably cover the same distance by air in,‘ 50 minutes. that heretyiore oo-F cup'cd seven hours and be received on a good airport. Transport planes‘ of Canadian Airways Limited now cover th‘s route on regular sched-l ule every day. Prciminary Efforts Confident; that a. public airport w‘s essental to the interests of his,‘ city as well as the province ati large, City Fathers were approach- assistaacey reaction} was-and one must remember it is! not so long ago that automobiles! were first permitted on the Isl:nd—, Dr. Jenkins found himself in the.‘ position of playing practically a‘ lone hand, but yet undaunted. With the advice of Federal Air-i ways inspectors, he proceeded to re-' move fences, rows of trees, stones and other obstructions until there was opened up two runways in the t':\ll‘illl ill cilrtous firsts iii cartons .- tlgvextriis in cartons age firsts in cartons storage seconds ill cartons filters. With a. measure of co-operatiou from civic and provincial authorit- ies, Dr. Jenkins was enabled to re-l eeive the Tune-Canada Air P88- ennt on August 31, whose display, attended by an enthusiastic audw fence of 8,000 people, marked the official opening of this fine new air- port. The; guest is ushered lti through a drive- way emerging from s. little wood jto find this picturesque home with ‘gardens sloping down to the river. But that is another complete story‘ in itself. Sufficient. to say that the air traveller thus favored becomes conscious of a new and fascinating use of aircraft for touring purpos- es where such good air and de- Iiightful scenery and hospitality a- wait him. It is perhaps divulging no secret to say that in additoa t0 convert- ing a large part. of their valuable farm the Jenkins family have 1n- curred a heavy personll expendit- ure in order to make available to their community and province Canada's newest and most attrac- tive airport. The importance of Upton‘ Airport. Charlottetown, as an addition to ,ihe fine chain of airports recently ‘opened in the Maritime Provinces brings up the question of what lmlght be done in order to make ‘most effective use of tlicsc new facilities. , Whle consideiing the pxeihillty :of air transport services within the ‘Maritmes, one is led to think these far-seeing people must have real- ,li.lOn in the future scheme of tn- ‘IEPHMIODII airways that is bound to come about. The record of the Maritlmes t0 date in airport development is out- standing. At Halifax a municipal expendit- ure of nearly e. quarter of a. mil- lion dollars was agreed to and re- sulted in providing e splendid alr- pori: located close to the_ heart of the city. Saint John, not to be out:- done by its sister. but rival city, went into the community's coffers to the extent of some $180,000 and in in area presenting almost unsurmount- able difficulties chiseled out of the rock an airport that will stand to the lasting credit of those re- sponsible for its development. On top of that the city made a grant in i930 of $3,000 to the Saint John Flying Club to help further the cause of aviation in that commun- ity. Moncton, proudly claiming to be the hub of future Maritime airways decided, and doubtless wisely, to proceed lkewlse and undertook an expenditure exceeding $20,000. Any- one using this fine airport will con- cur tn the fact that the city 80'? its moneys worth-a. good field with open territory surrounding. Down in Cape Breton the munic- ipaiities as such did not evidence interest by much in the way of tangible support but there were still a number. of enthusiasts centred a- round the Flying Club, who r-s gi-eet eflort, and personal expense literally hacked a good field out of the wood midway between Sydney and Glace Bay. And they made s. good 10b of it, too. Not only has Prince Edward Is- land Joined the airway chain with its privately sponsored field. but one learns that; Truro, (in an im- portant strategic point) and New Glasgow, as well are on the w"y to having yields opened early this year. Maritime Facilities ‘Phat, briefly is the picture from the ground. Mess til with other sections of the Dominion of equal area and population the expendit- ure per cspita is very high. Con- gratuhtions are due the Maritim- es. For reasons obvious to any inter- ested in progress in aviation, eer- ious consideration might be direct- ed toward making early and effec- tive use of the excellent facilities now avalable. If nothing more can be done at the moment it would seem to the oniooker that a triingle service within the iifaritlmes would be a sensi ‘ Clcv Iopmeni: for the very near future. While all’ mail service is only one phase of air transport, it is nevertheless freely recognized as the base around which other ser- vices ere developed. The secret was discovered by one elderly lady quite recently, who as a passenger on the Canadian Alrwlys Ltd. plane from P. E.
