Revolutionizing Rowing. THE INVENTION AN ENGUISHUMAN OFFERS rO SCULLERS OF TBE FUTURE. The Londen correspondent of the Herald writes:—“A_ certain Thomas Jones Edwards, deecribed as of the boreugh of Southwark, London, has just patented acontrivance which he | fondly hopes willestirely revolutionize | the art of sculling. ‘This ingenious gentleman points out that it is a mani- fest inconvenience for scullers to. sit with their backs tothe bows of their} boats, inasmuch as they cannot very | well see the direction in which they | are progressing. This is a self-evident proposidon, because Carumen have not tneir heads, while, | | events, they do | eyes in the back of in bardly contested not usually fad much time to gaze} round. So Mr. Kdwards has Invented | acurious something, which he says | gives the oarsman ;infinitely greater leverage on his sculls, and drives the} boat canee fashion. Moreover, the! manipulator wears uu compli- | cated arrangement of lings and braces, extending aeross his back and over his shoulders | ‘guys,’ if such a term can be applied, | bejog secured tothe handles of the Cullis. Thus he is ¢ nabled to throw the | } weight of his body into the stroke, and | the inventor declares that infinitely in- | creased momentem is acquired. I can- not describe hew the sculls are rigged beyond saying that each is attixed by : swivel io the rowlock of the opposite side of the boat to that in which the| blade eaiches the water. There is one} of these contrivances now at Putney, | and dts designer is anxiously ieadianr reund fora man bold enough to suffer | himself to be trussed up and te go afloat. Seme of these days [ suppose the neces- sary victim will be forthcomisg, and then I shail goto see the fun, or tragedy, whichever may be the result. Perhaps in a few weeks I shall be able to master the intricacies of the invention, and then I may say more about it. At present I scarcely feel warranted in calling upon American and Canadian oarsmen to tremble lest they lose their su- premacy.” —- ee A Sheep in a &hirt. An incident which was both rich and racy, and quite laughable. actually did occur near Symrna, Tenn.,a few days age, which was as follows-—Mr. T. D sheared the leng wool off his fuvorite pet | sheep a few days since. As the shades of evening began to gather, the air grew chilly. Mr. D. being a man of great sympathy, and in order to make his petas pleasant as possible, took shirt and pulled it over the body of the sheep and buttoned the collar aroun) the sheep’s neck, and let the sleeves hang loose, like a pair of wings. Mr. D.’s faithful dog espied this wonderful freak of «art and nature, and made battle with the poor creature at once. The poor sheep jumped the yard fence and ran for its life. It raninto the public road just as a lady and an infant child chanced to be riding by. Her horse grew frightened and ran for several hundred yards, but, as fate would have it, she remained firm io her saddle, and neither she nor the child was hurt. On the following morning this wonderful, celebrated sheep miade it appearance in afield, where its visit caused a general stampede, and where the snapping of trace ehaius and knock- ed down fences, and the word, “whoa! whoa! whoa!” bursting from _ the mouths ef ploughboys, made music in the air. During the day Mr. D. was seen huntinga sheep that could be easily indentified, because be had a shirt on. a ——> . <P. <a [he Great French Remedy, Dr, LeDuce’s Periodical Pills. Ch’town, May 7th, 1883—tf . \ ‘YE have made arrangements with the best makers of Gas Stoves in the United States, which we will be able to sup- ply the public, at the lowest possible price. We have also agreed with the Gas Com- pany (fer the purpose of introducing these stoves), to sell the first fifteen (15) for which we may receive orders, At their Net Cost, LANDED HERE. TESTIMONIALS. The following are a few testimonials from a list of several hundred :— The capacity of the Stove is surprising. With a No. 8 Stove we cooked for a party of seven, giving them broiled oysters, steak, lamb chops, and baked biscuit, in 45 minutes, at a cost for gas of 44 cents. On another occasion we gave a dinver in courses of twenty men, the bill of fare as follows: Broiled shad, beef steak, roast quarter of lamb, baked biscuit and coffee; heating the water for washing the dishes tour times, re-setting the table three times. All was accomplished in one hour and forty minutes, at an expense for gas of eleven cents. ‘This work was all done on one No. 8 tove. All were enthusiastic over the manner in Which the oysters, fish and meats were cocked ; none had experienced any so tender, juicy, and of such full flavor before. We coneider the stove a great success, and most complete in all its parts and arrangements. A. C. Woop, Supt. I bought one of your No. 12 Gas Cooking Stoves last September, for use in my restau- raut, and have used it ever since for baking, broiling and stewing. I can say for it that it is always ready and does its work rapidly; that there is no dust, no dirt, no surplus heat, as we are using only that portion that we need, and as soon as the article is cooked the gas is extinguished and there is no waste. I think it wiil do the same amount of work at less cost than coal, even at the high price of gas. It takes much less room than a coal range that would do the same work. I am perfectly satisfied with it and would not be without one for double the price. J. T. HARKER. The Gas Stove you sent me, I am glad to say has proved an entire suceess. if my testimony is of apy value to you, you are at liberty to use it. ‘The decrease in the coal bill more than offsets the increase in the gas ditto. The cooking is excellent and uni- form in its operation. No dirt or dust irritates the careful house- wife, and Mrs. 8. describes it as a ‘‘ real treasure,’ In my humble opinion, any man who really wants to add to the number of allotted days of his better-half, had better invest in a Gas Stove and save her worry, and himself ex- pense. W. H. Skymovr. We are perfectly delighted with our Gas | Stove. It gives entire satisfaction in every respect, Mrs. M. Penninoron, 2103 Vine St. ¥ our favor of the Ist inst. was duly received asking my opinion of the Gas Cooking Stove boughic last May, and in reply, would state the satisfaction re naerea by the stove | werk it willaccomplish is marvelous, together with the small expease and comfort attendin the same. Epwin A, GaReTr. Having used one of your No. 7 Gas Cooking Stoves for a considerable time past, it is with | pleasure that I bear testimony to its genuine werits, Lt boils, bakes, broils, roasts, and in fact, does everything thata first class stove or range can do, and with a saving of time and labor, that can only be appreciated by those who use them. It has given us the most entire satisfaction, and to use my wile’s words, ‘I would not be} | without it fur ten times the cost.” : ~- | From statements of our gas meter taken, | we tind it more economical than coal i . . . | MERCER KE. No other complaints are so insidious in their attack as those affecting the throat and lungs: none so trifled with by the majority of sutfer- ers. The ordinary cough or cold, resulting perhaps from a trifling or unconscious ex- posure, is often but the beginning of a fatal sickness. AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL has well proven its efficacy in a forty years’ fight witht throat and lung diseases, and should be taken im all eases without delay. A Terrible Cough Cured, “In 1857 I took a severe cold, which affected my lungs. I had a terrible cough, and passed night after we i without sleep. The doctors gave me up. tried AyeR’s CHERRY PEc- VORAL, Which relieved my lungs, indueed sleep, and afforded me the rest necessary for the recovery of my strength. By the continued use of the PECTORAL a perma- nent cure was effected. Croup. —A Mother’s Tribute, “While in the country last winter my little boy, three years old, was taken ill with croup; it seemed as if he would die from strangu- lation. One of the family suggested the use of AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL, a bottle of which was always kept in the house. This was tried in small and frequent doses, and to our delight in less than half an hour the little patient was breathing easily. The doc- tor said that the CHERRY PECTORAL had saved my darling’s life. Can you wonder at our gratitude? Sincerely yours, Mrs. EMMA GEDNEY.’’ 159 West 128th St., New York, May 16, 1882. “TIT have used AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL in my family for several years, and do not hesitate to pronounce it the most effectual remedy for coughs and colds we have ever tried.
