The initiation of this service meant that for the first time in the history of the areas, the north shore area of the St. Law- rence has been directly linked to the Maritimes. The area has a population of about 60,000, a .| figure which is ever increasitig, and it appears that it will likely become one f the best of MCA’s routes. Plans call for the new gen- | erating equipment to be in op- | eration by September, 1963. The new unit, part of a three and a half million dollar expan- sion progranf announced in 1960, will be twice as large as the new turbine and generator of 10,000 kilowatts, commissioned in 1960, which brought the installed ca- pacity of the plant to 32,500 kilo- watts, The turbogenerator is _ being |built by Associated Electrical | Industries Ltd., of Manchester, | England, and will operate on | twice the steam pressure of the |present units in the plant, 850 | pounds per square inch, at a | temperature of 900 degrees. It is expected that a marked increase in efficiency will result from this advance in steam pressure and temperature. ENLARGE PLANT A new oe barning boiler has h Lid, being of Galt, Ontario, able of evaporating 190,000 pounds of water per hour. in order to accommodate the new equipment it will be neces- sary to enlarge the plant and designs, specifications, and en- gineering plans for the new in- stallation are now being pre- pared by the Montreal Engine- ering Company Ltd. Expansion of the distribution system during the past year has included construction of 33 mil- es of 6900 volt transmission line between Charlottetown and Searletown, completing a high voltage loop from Charlottetown to Summerside to Searletown and back to Charlottetown. Construction of thir loop re- quired the installation of a.15,000 KVA transformer in Chariotte- town. It is expected that event- ually high voltage transmission lines will reach the Bloomfield area in the Western part of the Provinee, - Modernization of the cit v's street lighting system took a great stride forward during 1961 with more than 250 street lights opverted to the mercury _ Vapor Maritime Electric’ plans - $3,500,000 program for the cur- rent year is a new high voltage sub-station at Wellington which will relieve the present load at Mount Pleasant, and the in- creasing of the capacity of the Hunter River sub-station from 500 to 2,000 KVA. The capacity of the. Dingwell Mills’ sub-sta- tion will also be increased. Another sub-station will be constructed in Charlottetown to feed the rapidly developing North River Road district, and bédause of the increased influx to the National Park each year a three-phase system will be constructed to the Cavendish area Over the past 10 years the number of business and homes using electric power in Prince Edward Island ‘has more than doubled In 1951 the Maritime Electric had 9,900 customers, while 10 years later, in 1961, it was serv- ing more than 20,000.
