FINE RUN OF MACKEREL.-A
scaman belonging to the steamer
lloseina I3., in port from Sydney' yes-
tcrda with a cargo of coal, in conver-
sation with the Guardian, reports that
immense quantities of mackerel are
schooling off the South coast of Catpe
Breton and that the United` States
fishing fleet comprising some two
hundred' sail has returned with full
cargoes. The mackerel are a. splend-
id run being exceptionally large.

Three automobile parties came to the

school nleetlngs in many country dis-
tricts in past years have always been
poorly attended.Today,Tuestlay',howev-
'or,will likely find the ratepayers turn-
ing out in force, to suppport, or approve
the proposed large increase in the
teachers' sutrplennents. The problem
of how to'-keepn'-our teachers -in the
province sway from the lure of the
West, is an interesting and' important
one. New Brunswick is attempting to
solve the conundrum by requiring all
applicants for admission to the pro-
vincial normal school to put. ulp a
bond for $100 as a pledge that they
will teach in New Brunswick' for at
least threo years after they are quail
tied, or forfeit the hundred dollars.
Meanwhile, suggestion that "our
school districts' should attempt a sup-
plement at least equal to the amount
of the statuory allowance to teach-
ers" is interesting.-Supplements of.

should certainly be an effective means
