All the world is ‘shot to pieces, men
are roaring days and nights, for a lot
‘of boons -and bulwarks, and some fifty
kinds of rights; capital is awaiting
labor, -'lo,bor’s roundly hitting back,
and- our mills are ‘standing idle, and
our trains have Jumped the track. All
the struggling, lighting forces seem to
glory in the wreck, while the Ultim-
ate Consumer gets the cleaver inthe
neck. Oh, 'the Ultimate Consumer in
the scrap 'has little pai-t; he’d be hair
py just to labor in the office or the
mart; and to feed his wife and kid-
dies, and to buy the rags they need,
and provide against the future when
he's old and gone to seed; but, alas,
the bricks are flying, and the scrap-
pers are on deck, and the Ultimate
Consumer gets the dornlcks in the
neck. And the Ultimate Consumer
has a sad and weary lot, for he's nl-
ways bound to suffer, whether others
do or not' others do the frantic talk-

ation of ever since city wages were
distinctly higher than those upon the
farm. Today machinery has doubled

light like crops 'but is made in cities
and by labour that exacts lar more
than the iarmer’s' wage. Thus there

mer can afford to buy and to the ox-

be given special attention. First, take

books and magazine articles also Tur-
‘nish a wealth of information. If pos-
sible attend one of the tractor schools
which will be conducted during the
winter. Leave nothing undone that
will fit you to become a more pro-
ficient tractor operator. ,
A properly fitted work shop is a nec-
essity on most farms. lt provides a
means of acquiring the “kna.ck" iii do-
ing repair work. Again at critical
times, such as harvesting or seeding
seasons, one lung trip to town for re-
pairs' may cause a loss more than
equal to the value of a well equipped
shop.
Paint although last mentioned is by
no means the least important iscior
in .prolonging the usefulness ot -an
implement. Painted machinery on the
farm is an exception rather than a
general rule. The chief utility of
paint ig in protecting materials rather
than improvinz appearances. Paint.
of good quality only should be used
and the surface to"be painted should
be dry and clean before the paint is
applied.
