T. Tanton. who has served 36 years on the School Board. were honored last evening at a dinner at the Summerslde High School prepared by the stu- dents of the home economics class. Attending this dinner were the present members of the School Board and other guests. The two teachers are retiring from the teaching staff at the end of this school term, and Dr. Tan- ton retired from the school Board this week. Mrs. Wood has taught at the Summerside High School for 37 years and also taught for three years in Western Canada. Miss Bowness spent 26 of her teaching years in Summerside. After attending Prince of Wales College. she taught for a year iii North St. Eleanor's. and a year at Alha before proceeding to West- ern Canada where she taught school for nine years. On returning to the Island Miss Bowuess taught for five years at Alberton before coming to Sum- mcrside She has been an active mem- ber of the Teachers Federation and I served for three years as presi- dent. She is at present a member of the Board of Governors of that organization Dr. E. T. Tanton. until his re- tirement this week. served with the School Board since 1917. and was chairman of the board when the present Academy was built in the 193015. He estimates that upwards of one thousand students had passed through grades eleven and twelve since its inception with resultant savings of one million dollars to the parents of Summerstde stu- dents. Mr. Clarence Mercer, school su- pervisor. added his best wishes to the three guests on behalf of the entire teaching staff.-S Discuss S'side Electric Light Plant Wages -As the result of a petition from employees of the municipally own- ed electric light department re- garding the present wage scale. the Summerside Town qcuiicil held a special caucus meeting last evening. Following the meeting it was learned that letters form the Sum- merside council will be written to several other electric light utilities to ascertain their scale of wages for the several occupations within this department. It is understood that the petition- ers will be advised of this action. and that further consideration will be given to their petition when the rates of other similar utilities have been studied.
