Passengers on a street car in the Quaker City the other day were at- tracted to a well dressed man of mid- dle age because of something peculiar they noticed about his right ear. It seemed to those who looked that the ear was minus a lobe. Suddenly there was a flop, and the interested pas- sengers then noticed that the ear was all right, with the lobe in the place ught to be. the time the passengers had gone deep into wonder over the strange sight the man raised his hand and pushed the lobe into the opening of the ear, placing the ear in the condition it was before the flop. Noticing that the man who sat next to bim stared in an iuquiring way at him, the man with the magic ear said that the lobe was his earache cure. He was a great sufferer from the ache, he said, and formerly used cotton to shut the wind out of his ear. One day he was without cotton and found that he could shove the lobe into the It did not only keep the wind out, but the pain disappeared tuicker, and since then he has always rut the lower part of his ear into use when the earache has come on. Wendell Phillips and Blaine. When Wendell Phillips was last In ishington, be was for a few minutes en the floor of the United States sen- ate, surrounded by a group of senators, among whom was Senator James G. Blaine, always a favorite with Mr Phillips. It so happened that a few weeks before this time Mr. Blaine, in preseuting to congress the statue of Governor King. first governor of Maiue, to be placed in the rotunda of the capitol, had commented severely on the loyalty of Massachusetts, and especiaily the Federalist party, during with Great Britain in 1812. Of this party the father of Wendell Phillips, John Philiips, was a con spicuous member. When Blaine’s was made Dawes and Hoar were senators from Massachusetts, and they both essayed some sort of an impromptu reply thereto, but did them selves little credit in parrying the thrusts of Blaine’s glittering rapier. So. when Wendell Philips met Blaine on this oceasion, he said to him laughingly, “1 wish 1 had been a mem- ber of this body for about an hour the other day when you made that speech attacking the Massachusetts Federalists.” “Al.” said Mr. Blaine with that ready wit which never deserted bim “if vou had been here I shouldn’t have that speech!’—Harper’s Maga- the war speech made zine _——— - Pain.
